I have never done it but have been interested in it I had all these ideas on how to train a dog for this but from what I can read and talking to a man who does it as part of his living: go coyote calling in the spring and early summer. This is when they have pups and are more territorial and protective. It is the only time this really works well. And they just let the dog roam while calling. They don't really seem to do any tricky training. the smart dogs learn that when they are getting run down by a protective coyote to run to papa cause papa has a gun.

david is on the money with the time of the year. however it will work at other times also just not as good. basically you get set up to call and tie the young dog a ways from you on a ten or twelve ft lead. when the yotie comes in his focus will be on the dog not you. after you let the pup see this a few times start letting him run loose but you need to have a handle on him. he will see the yotie before you usually and go out towards it.if he runs it off then you whistle him back or use the tone. when he comes back the yotie thinks he is going back to dinner and it will follow. sometimes the yotie gets aggressive and actually runs the decoy dog back into range. a smart dog figures the game out after a few lessons. good luck and good hunting
