Purpose of the Race

As the hint of fall upon the land presents a time of change,
So does the season of our life bring purpose into range,
There was a time in our youth when wisdom had no space,
But that was before we figured out THE PURPOSE OF THE RACE,
The young hound has no boundaries his driving force is greed,
The destination of his years is balanced between handling and breed,
He will follow trails going nowhere, and scents he should not face,
All because he hasn' t figured out THE PURPOSE OF THE RACE
As houndsman we assimilate to bring the quarry down,
there are many ways to get it done, we chose to use a hound,
Some folks say it makes no sense to feed a pack and chase,
But thats because they havent figured out THE PURPOSE OF THE RACE,
As I look back upon the years gone by, the choices made along the way,
I ponder on the trails I've ran and places I might have stayed,
Someday it won't matter whether I was tight mouthed or last in the chase,
The real issue will be.......did I figure out
THE PURPOSE OF THE RACE
