Idaho hunters: my buddy lost his blue dog up Anderson Creek on West Mountain out of Indian Valley this last week. They were on a little bear and he put up a pretty bad run and when the dust cleared this blue dog never came back in . My friend went back four days looking for him and he can get the collar weak down in the drainage but he has walked every foot of it, and no dog, and the collar seem to be hidden. He is thinking the collar may have come off and the dog has wandered out of there and maybe got picked up. He is a pretty big houndy type young dog. he has big blue body spots and tan trim. He is not a broke dog, and this was his first bear race but he went. My friend Tom in Weiser raised him, and he is also the boys family pet, so any help you good hunters out there could give him would really be appreciated. The dog is not branded but is DNA Typed so he can be match identified. Any information will be treated confidentially, and a sizable reward is offered.

mike , this is a tough deal, always hurts to hear of a horrible situation of a missing dog, the not knowing is the worst thing a guy can face, the thing that comes to mind is if the dog was thrown out of a race did he fall victim to wolves ? how experienced is your friend on the telemetry. i had a dog shot and my collar destroyed. i was persistant and found the responible party. like a lost child you don't ever give up until you solve this good or bad. been there. sucks . my heart goes out to your friend. good luck.

I had a collar come off one of my hounds this last spring, and then wondered if I could walk to it with my QuickTrack receiver. Well, I did walk right to the collar and the dog finished the race with the other dogs so all went well. However, that was the first time I'd ever had a collar come off and realized how it could cause problems................

Thanks guys! Yes I know one of the other dogs came in out of this race and was chewed up badly enought to need to visit the vet. But I am not sure that it was not them damn wolves. We will see the tracking collar thing is a bit or a mystery. He knows how to use the system pretty well and following me around down in this dang country for a few years he got plenty of practice.

These wolves are super smart, and dealing with human encounters more than ever before they learn even more tricks. I am not saying for sure it was wolves, but they are present in that area. I am in contact with several men that work in the wolf programs from the standpoint of problem wolves and livestock damage. These men have a lifetime of bear and lion experience. They own hounds and still hunt lion and bear at times, but they do not hunt around the wolf areas. Wolves get a hatrid for their domestic cousins easily, and their strength, speed, cunning and terminal skill allows them to easily eliminate this competition. Don't be fooled into thinking these wolves especially the northen wolves of Montana and Idaho are like a pack of overgrown coyotes. They are nearly shetland pony sized at times and can take down and kill a full grown mountain grizzley in pack order. Moose and elk are child's play, and a bluetick, walker, redbone , plott , black and tan or english is pretty much like potato chips.

I talked to Tom. He said he found a tracking collar. It was smashed up and looked like it and been un-buckled. Still no word on the dog.

HI, DAN. I WAS SLOW TO FIGURE OUT WHO TOM WAS NOW I KNOW. DAN I HAVE A GOOD FRIEND FROM LA PINE WHO JUST RETURNED FROM THAT SAME AREA AS TOM LOST HIS DOG . I WILL CONTACT HIM ,AS HE HUNTS WITH A FELLOW WHO LIVES IN THAT AREA. I WILL GET THE WORD OUT TO THEM. HE STATED THERE WAS A BUNCH OF HUNTERS IN THAT AREA. HE SAID SEVERAL PARTIES STOPPED TO LISTEN TO THERE DOGS TREE.SOUNDED LIKE THERE WAS DOGS ON DOGS. HE TOLD ME HE WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE COOPERATION HE RECIEVED FROM EVERYONE HE RAN INTO WHILE HUNTING THERE. STICK TO THIS AND YOU WILL FIND AN ANSWER. GOOD LUCK!

That place is crawling with wolves. You have to be real carefull when you hunt there. I live close and havent heard anything about a found dog. Doug Hanson (local government trapper) said wolves took out a guys whole pack, last winter. Hope you find it and good luck.
