No one needs a pup trainer but its way faster and easier with a lot less headache. Andy

Very true Andy, but a older pup trainer aint all that much better yeah its there here and there to help but that's it. A person needs a younger dog in its prime two caught cats does more for a dog then 6 tracks.

A pup trainer in my eyes is any dog any age that is trust worthy of off game. Andy

Twist, That's also how I look at them but a lot of others thinks a pup trainer is an older dog. Should have worded the previous posts better haha...

We'll didn't know it was a big deal Iv never done this before got a 6 month old pup I want to get rolling on cats figured with another dog there it might help a lil more

I would say in my opinion do it all by yourself. So if you ever lose your pack you can do it again. I trained up my first two without older dogs. Lots of trial and error. Mostly errors.

RRR, Another dog there that knows what its doing and is not trashy will be a huge help. Old or young, that's your choice. The other option is if you cant find or afford another dog, walk out tracks in he snow, leash the dog up and just walk down them. When the dog can take it cut it loose. And continue to walk it out to help the dog if there are any problems.

The use of another dog to start a pup is a good way to go but it needs to be the right dog. Old washed up cat dogs have a tendency to be jealous and even senile. I have seen topnotch dogs do really weird things when they get some age on them and young dogs start out hustling them. Taking back tracks, false treeing, starting trash, getting growly, and the list goes on and on. There are people out there that dont have a problem selling these "pup trainers" to new hunters that dont know what the dog is or isnt doing. If you are wanting to use a dog to start your pup,find a good finished dog 4-6 years old and bite the bullit and pay the money. Then use it like a whore and get as many pups going with it as possible with the years it has left in it. The right pup trainer will teach you a lot about cats as well as the pup. This is just my opinion and is a very general one at that. Different things work for different people.

Mark make a very important point here. Your pups will be a product of your pup trainer , ( monkey see monkey do ) Pick your pup trainer wisely.

Hard to call yourself a cat hunter when you buy a dog and put it on a track. If it was me, and it was me at one time, I would take that dog and walk out tracks. You will learn more about a cat's habits in 2 or 3 tracks than you would learn in a year of watching a dog on a gps screen. You will get way more satisfaction out of that 1st cat and knowledge about a cat you'll carry for a lifetime.

Sorry RRR, i must of misunderstood your original post. I was just sharing some of the things i have seen older dogs do with young dogs if you go the pup trainer route.
