The bears are active for sure. I have been running bears away from our orchard since June. In last 2 weeks have treed 4 differnt bears multiple times and run one big one off that will not tree several times as well. The big guy is 300+lbs might be 350. Got a real close look at him other day, 5 feet away with one dog in between me and him and 3 other dogs on his ass. The bear looked like it was about to bite Max who was at my feet but the other three on his ass sent him on past. Got my heart rate up though! I called them off and went home as I didn't want to push my luck.

Sadly no general hunt in this unit... From talking to others about this I gather the powers that be think its too easy to kill bears with dogs so we only have a spring rifle hunt followed by a bow hunt all before August so dogs can't be used. Might be somthing to that since all my "runs" are 15-45 mins long and most of the bears don't go more than 1/2 mile before treeing or baying up. Mind you all these are hot ie dogs are sleeping on the porch or hanging out with me in the orchard and they smell them and rush the fence and I let them out to run the bears farther away. I keep hearing on here about bear races that go on for miles but that must be including the cold trailing part as well.

I just let my dogs run the bears away from the orchard, so far this year no bears have climbed the fence and I want to keep it that way.

tom be happy that the bears there don't run far, and no its not including the cold trail. the worst bears always seem to be the one thats standing in the road up here, you look at your buddy and both say this boy is in serious trouble, drop the box and three days and two counties later you finally pick up the last dog or two. when i was a kid my old man used to grap a stick and make an X in the road where we turned loose, somebody would ask what he was doing and he would say ''men this is where we screwed up'' and late that night looking for dogs they soon understood..

no good. i have a spot in 6b that is away from all the nasty canyons but we didnt rig any bears in there friday sat or sun so we got stupid and went down by the rim and got a good rig and just like they always do it ran all the way to the bottom. Lost dogs and just got the last one back today. Might head to unit 1 this weekend, i have a friend who has caught 4 and let them go so we might head up there and try our luck.

well just got back from the white mnts and this guy who was supposedly catching all those bears ended up being full of crap and i dont think he had caught a bear all season. Anyways we managed to tree one bear and my brother took the bear with one well placed arrow. This one young dog i have has only been on 4 or 5 bears and he is already rigging and starting the tracks like the older dogs. i think hes gonna make a real nice dog. Here are a few pics[/url]
