Wire hair pointers were and are used to rrail wounded and dead game. When they reach the animal or bay it they are to sound off. Look on the web for wirehaired pointing dog tests and you can see what the breed expectaions are. I use mine to lure coyotes into shooting range and he will also finish off any wounded dogs. Just need to be careful if there is more than one coyote. Wire hairs are definately a versatile dog.

The gwp, gsp, and others were all used for trailing animals and obviously pointing birds. My stepish brother has two Pointers I gave him out of a litter that are absolutely hell on coons. Good trail dogs and super tree dogs. I just bird hunt the pups parents, but if there is a coon that touches my back deck the pointers are on it before the hounds even know what happen. There gritty, I would put my one Pointers nose against about anything. She rides in the truck some nights and she'll get out and work a cat track with the other dogs. Probably should try her on a jump race one of these days lol...

Look up Dave Carlson out AZ, He runs 1/4 to 1/2 GSP's crossed with hounds. I've got a 5 month old 1/2 GSP 1/2 Walker . Been holding him back when I can , But when I let him out of the box to clean out or to get a little exercise if the old dogs start a track he's gone. His sire is full GSP and opens on track and trees. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted one , but now I wish I'd of got two of them from that litter.

I have 5 cross pups here that are 13 weeks old. They are 1/2 GWP and 1/2 Redbone. Cant wait for them to mature so I can see what type of hunt they have.

I have owned and hunted pointers for 10 yrs. I have had them point a number of things but have always discouraged them on off game. I think that you could get them pretty reliable on rabbits since it seems to be the one off game that I have seen pointed the most, I have had points on hot lion tracks before. I think pointing anything that does not set like a bird does may be just a waste of time.

How do they hunt compared to a hound? Do they hunt like a typical bird dog heads up style of running? I guess they've got a good nose to track wounded game. How do the crosses hunt what do they add to the hound? I've been wanting to cross one with a bluetick to get wire haired dogs I'm a big fan of wire haired lol
John Porter do you have any pics of your pups?

My pups at 15 weeks spend about half the time with their noses in the air. Couple more months and they will start training and I will be able to evaluate their style and noses a lot better. Hoping they will add a little brain and more bottom to my line of mutts I run.
I kept 4 females and will cross one to my male blue tick in a couple years if they make the grade.
Kenneth, text my cell at 828-557-5410 and I will send you a few pictures.

I run Drahthaar on roe deer, red deer, fallow deer, sika deer, wild boar, rabbit, hare, and birds. I only use their pointing ability with the bird hunting, but out with the rifle after deer they will let you know if the deer are in an area of cover. Otherwise I use them to hunt deer from thick forestry towards staghounds or guns. Same with the boar. They blood track easily. Hunting fur, I see them using both wind born scent as well as ground scent and they can shift on both.
Im thinking about putting a good fox hound over one of them especially for wild boar.
A pure pointer has a much closer range than a pure hound, which is fine for me most of the time as I dont want them to feck off into the next county after game. But with boar I require a more persistent hunter at times.

that what I was talking about let you know when one is in a area of cover we cant hunt deer with dogs but fox and rabbit and coyote well hold up in cover and I was thinking about it for still hunting and I like the idea of a closer range dog in the thick forest we hunt but on use them to dive them to the gun or staghound do they run them like a hound if so why use them for it unsted of a hound

Hello again Kyboy, you seem like a man that likes what I like haha
I use my german wirehair for fur mostly (Deer tracking mostly). She is a good tracker. She will cast out well, easy to handle, she can work older tracks, but she will fly on hot scent, she will usually go out to around 2-3km, but she aint a hound, so naturally pointers will come back to you. However if that deer or boar was wounded, and splatting blood, she will trail that bugger till she catches no matter what, she knows the difference, usually I use her to hunt live game though. Ive hunted her on boar, she tried to be a catch-dog at first but some big tuskers knocked that attitude right out of her, and now she will bay a little too, at least until other dogs pile in.
I started her on birds as a young dog, and I can still take her hunting for snipe/woodcock/pheasant/duck etc and she will point steady. Im glad I trained her up for that first! I think Id have ruined her pointing if I started her on hunting right away(?) Shes a cracking retriever too.
A very versatile breed in my opinion!
SNIPE!

RABBIT

BOAR

HARE

I have a gsp who will point rabbits and tree squirrels(not much of a bay though). I don't discourage him from either, mostly because I will eat a squirrel and rabbit and their both legal to take with dogs.
When he was younger he tracked deer before I broke him off of that(mostly) and even tracked a bear a time or two( broke him of that one real quick)
He hunts most nose down, but will lift his head on occasion. I will say I'm not sure if this is usually to the breed, because he is my first hunting dog and I'm not the best dog trainer in the world.
