I recently got a 5 week old redbone cur mix, and thought If i started him early enough i could make a good coondog of him. He has the right breed's in him, but i dont know when to start him, and how to start him. I was thinking of getting him used to playing with a good ole coon tail, then drag training him, and finally exposing him to a coon in a roll cage. Just wondering what the best way would be to go about it?

Teach him his name sit stay come and then let him grow up some. Do hot dog drags around your house. My advise is do not expose him to a live coon to early. What ever training you do make it fun

To early it could do more harm than good, scare the pup. The tail and drags will be good to exercise his nose teach him to usee it. I start all my pups early but that is pretty early. most important thing to me any way is very a good handle on the pup at this age hey him to come to you listen to you so when you do turn him lose he doesn't just run all over the country wild and look for him all night. Lol. Speaking from experience hear. Lol

Ok, I'll bite. DONT DO ANYTHING right now. Obedience for me begins at 6mo. Too much control at too young an age and you'll be wondering why the dog won't leave your side at 2 years old. Hunting dogs aren't stock dogs. A hound will let you know when they need some direction and what direction. Freedom is huge. Walks in the woods with no leash is the best thing for toddler pups. Don't push education, esp with this type of cross. You don't know if the cognitive skills will lean more towards the cur side or the redbone side. This is just my opinion.
