Start out with a pup from a proven strain. Saves a lot of head aches. Andy

If i was you i would just take them to the woods and let ol Crowder show em how to catch cats! He knows more about it than any human ever will!

Mark, Crowder has been nice helping the young one's cast out further looking for the track. And getting them old tracks going. Got rid of a good start dog now I'm hurting, dogs run good catch good and tree good. Just weak at starting old tracks right now.

White Pack? That must be Nelson's Bear when I went up to snag Old man Crowder. Went threw the txt that is what it is, sure a nice dog believe he is around 8 years old wouldn't mind owning him. I'll try to get a few more clip's out your way critter's are starting to move now.

What is some of the thing's you guys do to get younger dogs picking up the pace?

To pick up the pace with all my dogs, I drop the tailgate!

Seems to work the best for me!

Good luck!

If they aren't keeping up with Crowder you may want to try some different dogs. Crowder is 12 years old. Just sayin

I raise my own or sometimes get a pup from another cat hunter, that's from good stock. After they're 7 months old i start them with the old dog. I only use a shock collar for trash breaking or excessive barking around home.If they don't have the natural ability to make a complete hound i don't keep them and i don't keep many.I realize most guys don't share my philosophy on training dogs but that's just how i do it.

Pretty hard to teach a young dog to pick up the pace, exposure and if they have it they have it if not move on to another prospect. Andy

Mark, I didn't mean pick up the pace in the race. I guess I should have worded it better. I do alot of mixing and matching when I'm running the dog's most seem to got it and over half can and do catch on there own. Just wondering if there are things people do to make a younger dog grow or mature faster I guess.

Twist, Most these dogs any body would like to own I'm sure. I have a few when hunted alone or together have a tough time starting track's There just not start dogs. So was wondering what a person could do if he could do something.

The dog's are hunted 4-6 days a week. Each one of them know's what there looking for. Maybe I'm trying to be to greedy wanting to start more tracks and colder tracks. These dog's start alot of tracks behind other hunters. Who have good to decent dogs. Just trying to pick everyone's brains. Mark I thought by getting crowder he would show me how much Im missing. But as of right now he ain't starting anything the other's cant. So maybe I'm crying about nothing IDK...

Robin touched on something pretty important to me. I dont take a pup to the woods until they know that the tone comes just before the bite. That has been learned around the house in a non hunting situation. When i take them hunting they get down every time the older dogs do. If they get off track to far from the older dogs and i think they could possibly be fooling with trash they get called back by name and if they dont respond they get toned. If it does by chance turn into a trash race i will do whatever i can to get around and catch them WITHOUT using stimulation. I believe they need to be on quite a few start to finish good game races before they are corrected on trash with stimulation. I use to be quick on the trigger on pups trashing before they had some good races behind them. I dont think a pup knows it is being corrected for running off game rather it thinks it has got too far away from the handler the road or the other dogs or possibly just for running. Get some good game start to finish races behind the pup before you come down on them to hard or most likley you will end up with a pup that tightens up and wont hunt wide on its own. JMO

That's the one downfall with snow, around here, conditions usually only permit running maybe 3 days a week. You should be able to make a mediocre dog look good running 6 days a week. I'm on the end of the second week of no running with bad crust, makes a guy wish he ran dry ground.
