Does anybody know how to get a dog from eating its own feces? The new dog I picked up seems to like his own crap when he's in the kennel,He leaves it be if he's out running around. He was a little thin when I got him so I don't know if it was a habit he picked up recently because he was hungry or what? There is some stuff you can buy ,but I thaught somebody might know of a cheaper remedy. :?

There is a substance you can buy that you add to the dog food, its suppose to be flavorless until it hits the digestive system, then the acids and bases create a horrible tasting chemical that the dogs will never eat again. I think I saw it in boatmans or somewhere like that, I can not remember where but I remember reading about it.

This is a habit he picked up from malnutrition (spelling?). A dog will eat his own crap if he is not getting enough nutrition out of his food. If he was thin that explains everything. I'd feed him two or three times a day for awhile and try cleaning his kennel as often as possible. When his body gets back to where it needs to be he should forget about this. Horses will often do the same thing. They try getting whatever nutrition is bypassed in their fecal matter.

Some dogs just do it. Period. It doesn't have a thing to do with malnutrition.
Some just have the desire to do so. Just like some dogs desire to eat rocks. This is out of boredom. Other dogs under the same situations won't even think of eating the rocks.
Unfortunitely, I have some that will eat them.

For trying to stop them from eating their crap, you can try Adolfs meat tenderizer on their food. You need to put a good amount on there.

You can also buy the stuff called 4Bid.
I've seen it in the Lioncountry catalogue.

Good Luck!

It's just something that dogs do. Malnutrition isn't the answer. Feed a pack the same feed and you will find some that do it regardless of the feed, and others want. An old timer with many years of raising dogs said adding a little pineapple juice to the food will stop stool eating.

Thank you guy's for all the feedback.I was getting ready to say even though it's a nasty habit it made kennel cleanup pretty damn easy, but when I went out this afternoon to feed it looked a bomb went off  There was one that was solid but the rest of it looked like he could of crapped through a screen door and not even hit a wire.It was pretty rank.As I'm typing this my son came in and told me the dog had another movement that was real runny, but he's not eating any of it.He is gaining some weight so I'm hoping maybe he will quit.I'll just keep an eye on him and go from there. Thanks again.
