Some times I will pat the tree and even bark my self sounds silly but dog respond to it some times of that don't work I use an old dog to work the drag. And bark. Find some one that has an older dog that will tree then bring your pups in

Guys are your seasons real short? I ask only because if a dog handles and can run a drag he's probably better off in the woods. As far as being silent on drags most hounds with a pretty good nose are I think. They mostly just start following it out of interest as pups then because you encourage it. And while they enjoy it. It doesn't get their heart racing like real game will. First time they hit a warm track watch them fire up.
Drags are always brought up. I have some theories on dog training scents. But in most cases a piece of fresh hide is better. But if you can't run game for whatever reason you are better off getting the dog on drags. And if your biggame season is short you should find small game to run with your hound also. If the trend of shorter seasons continues in more areas I don't really see any other way to keep hounds going. The fox pens and hog pens are one answer but they don't look on bear pens the same way most places.
