my dogs are bear bait

I took my 4 month old yard pup (1/4 plott 1/4 Kemmer 1/2 Mt Curr ) and a buddy of mines "trained" squirrel dog yesterday since it was opening day of squirrel season. I wanted the pup to see some fur come out of a tree. We hunted around and treed two rats. I was impressed with the way my little "yard" dog pup was hunting. They bailed off the mountain and I sat down on a log to wait for them to tree another rat. They hadn't gone 50 yards when they both blew up. By the sound of it they were looking at something and the pup was roaring at whatever it was. I jumped up to see my buddies dog high tailing it back to me and my little pup was giving it all she had with a mangy 200 # bear right behind her giving HER chase. I tore off the mountain cussing the bear and daring him to catch my pup. When we were 20 yards apart the bear desided that he didn't want none of the crazy thing running down the mountain and went up a tree. After I calmed down alittle I hissed the pup and my buddies dog on the tree but only the pup would bark at all. We walked back up the mountain and sat there for a while and he came down. As soon as I heard him hit the ground the pup and I bailed off the mountain after him trying to pup him back up again but this time he was threw with both of us and left the country. The pup went into the laural barking every breath but came back after a short time. When we got home I was telling my buddy about what happened and how his dog would never make a bear dog. He said" I know I've shocked her off every bear and coon she's treed that's why she's worth so much money". I don't know what flipped that ole bears trigger and made him wanna run after a dog that far but, whatever it was I've never seen nothing like it before. I think when season opens in a few weeks I might just take them two and let them bring the bear to me.
