Killed a bear

Went out this weekend with a hunter that had a south slope yellowstone tag and got one killed.

It rained all night Saturday night and we didn't think we was going to find a bear Sunday but the hunting gods were on our side. We headed up a canyon about 8:30 in the morning when my Echo dog started bumping a little bit and low and behold there was the track walking down the road, it was a very hard track to see since the rain from the night before had rained it out, but every once and a wile you could see the flat spots. So I stoped the truck and unloaded my three bitches, Lucky (6) Echo (4) and Skittles (4) I had a hard time figuring out where the track left the road so I left it up to the dogs to figure it out, Those 3 dogs trailed the track about a mile down the road, barking every so often before they finaly cut off the road on a trail the bear left on, they were not getting very much sent so I had my doubts about this one and not to mention it was still a little rainy. I walked with dogs trying to help them out but it was not doing me any good, I just could not see the track, Finaly the bear cut off the trail into the trees and the dogs could get a ltlle better scent, but it was still slow moving but they were at least moving the track, they trailed acrooss the side hill for a wile and down into a side canyon about 2 miles at this point, and things finaly started looking up. My hunter asked me, do you think they are going to get it jumped? and I told him it is hard to say at this point this is a pretty nasty track with all the rain in it. Those dogs trailed over one more little side canyon and boom the jump was on. They trailed back up the canyon 2 miles or so and was treed, it was a pretty neat to see those 3 dogs dig and scratch that bear track and end up with a tree when we thought it wasn't possible, but those three bitches seem to do that often, just when you think you are done they pull something out of there butts and get the job done. The coolest part about the whole hunt was getting the bear back to the truck, it was so steep we just roled the bear over a few logs till we got to the steepest part of the hill ( easier sayed than done I guess) with a couple hard pushes the sucker rolled clear down the mountain to the road, that was sweet if you ask me. The hunter was very proud of his bear and could not of been happier, that is what it is all about to me..

Have a good fall season all and be safe, Later.

Congratulations Richie, and it sure sounds like those dogs of yours are making you proud. I've always claimed if a guy could rig and catch bears on the south slope without an illegal bait he's a pretty darn good bear hunter........

Thank ya sir I appreciate the compliment.

Those bears are definetly hard to find and catch on that mountain for sure, it makes me happy to know I have harvested 3 bears on that unit this year, and you know for a fact the baiting thing is out of the question for me. I cant believe some of the houndsmen out there that have the balls to actualy set a bait, this hunting means way to much to me to do that.

Well have a good one man, Later
