Dog quit hot track

I have what I thought was a very good started hound suddenly quit a hot bear race this week. The hound has been on about a dozen trees and 5 kills over the last 2 years, but I haven't been able to hunt much this fall because of my health. Monday my dog started a track in front of the other dogs and was running about 100 yards in front of the other dogs, but when the other dogs began to catch up my dog quit and went back to hunting as if he had never been on the track. What was particularly odd was that the bear treed about 150 yards after my dog quit. He also seemed to avoid the other hounds when we got to the tree, and only started treeing when they backed off. He has always finished the race before and never give any indication that he has been whipped out.
Anyone have any experience with a similar situation or and insight?

That is what I thought might have happens, I was just shocked that he quit after starting and leading the race. He did seem nervous around the other dogs though.

Did you hear him catch it out in front of the other dogs or was it running the whole time? Sounds like he may have caught it and it sent him packing.

It was still running. And not he say he couldn't be sent back, but one of his greatest strengths has been his gritt.

Find what dog or dogs are jumping him and don't hunt with it anymore or cull it or them . that will most likely solve the issue and many more to come .

You obviously have a mean dog in the pack. Identify and destroy or you will have many more problems. IMHO
