I have had the great honor to hunt with Van and his dogs this summer and I have never met a more humble houndsman in all my life. I am taking Van's place here in Colorado and there are some big shoes to fill, most of all it will not be as fun with out Van. My son and I really enjoyed his all night stories and jokes.
An incredible pack of dogs a great mule and a great man.
If you call yourself a houndsman or even a wanna be, you owe it to yourself to get Van's videos he has two out, Lion and Bear they are some of the best videos out there. To order them you need to call Van at 970-560-0282 He can take your credit card or send him a check.

10-4 on Van he is as good as they get!
Van probably would site several older hunters thru his life that have helped him and given him some advice, but like al the greats Van has learned what he knows by being there for forty plus years with the hounds in the wild places.
Pacojack you will do terrific and you will also have a blast spending time where you don't have to listen to siens, road noise, and cell phone conversation.
Good luck and have fun.

Well thank you Mike,That means alot.
And it is so nice not to hear all that junk.
One day I plan on hunting one of those Topper dogs you talk so highly of , I hunted with that Samson dog of Ricky's and wasn't at all impressed but that is not a fair judgement of the breed, so maybe one day I will end up with one.

and maybe even like it, but for now I will have to make due with this junk I have

I'm just lucky that some game is scared of how ugly they are and run up a tree

Or I wouldn't be able to tree a thing.
Couldn't agree more with you about Van, just a top of the line Man.
Good luck to you and happy hunting

Pacojack,
I think if you got the right cross on Topper you would like it. Samson although the leading catch dog in that area is probably better as a reproducer and that is somthiong even many top catching dogs are not.
Had a year old female out of Topper today hit a bare ground lion track on sandy wind whipped soil and it was pretty tuff cuz some other dogs even more expereinced didn't do any shiny work on it and she I mean she smoked it! That is natural talent because she hasn't had any game to speak of and she shows great nose, and super speed. I have another female out of her mother as well but the younger one is sired by Samson so we will see how that turns out. The female that these two are out of is a Nance top Loose Bruce bottom and just about as good as bare ground dogs get and it was natural talent. I think that female still has a whole lot to do with the final product but from what I know at this point old Topper Again is a reproducer of cold nosed, fast cat dogs. At this point some of Samson's finest prodgeny have come from Washburn crossed but I am excited to see how these out of Milly and Fancy do I think they will be better than the old man himself.
Good luck and chase a few of the them long tails down our way, seems we are running a bit thin on them in a lot of areas contrary to popular beleif. LOL!

Mike,Well I am glad to hear his offspring are doing good Because like I said I hunted with ol samson and I wouldn't have given you a 22 bullet for him, sorry I know you are pretty high on him but honest to God he would be dead if he were mine. But like I said that is one dog out of the breed and someday I will have to hunt with another one.
We don't have many longtails here were I am but we have a ton of Bob kitties, and bear so if I run across one of those long tails I will heard it down your way.
Take care

Paco, glad to see someone telling it like it is about Ol Sampson.
We need more truth than BS in the hound dog world

Sorry Paco,
But I guess I'm not as cool as you make me out to be but thanks anyway.
I've never hunted with Van. Camped with him once but never hunted with him.
He told me he will only run with Airedale guys so I had to go the other way out of camp.
Dude, you better talk to BuddyW. Somebody has logged on this site as you and posted "My dogs are nothing to brag about." Damn hackers!!
I knew first thing when I read that we were dealing with a hacker!!
Van is a helluva good guy but he doesn't really have any reason to hunt with a non legend like myself.
