I'm trying to put a BNC quick connect end on my long range, not the kind that screws on but where you splice and crimp it don't on. I am not an electrician. I watched a few videos and thought I had it down but when I'm done I get pretty much zero connection. Not any better than with no antenna connected to the handheld and worse than with the regular handheld antenna connected. Can anybody help me troubleshoot?

My guess is you've got some wires touching when you fed it into the shaft of the connector. I know it's too late now but they do make an adapter.
