My cousin gave me a 2 and a half year old redtick male that probably hasn't been in the woods 5 times. Took him out Monday night by hisself and tried pretty good for not being hunted really! (woods very dry) Dog knows how to load so apparently someone has handled him some.

Took him out last night with my uncles 3 males and before we ever turned them loose he went nuts and wanted to eat them up! We did foresee this possability so luckily we brought 2 trucks and I left and went some where else. He is going out more and trying to take tracks but has't opened yet. He has checked a few trees and didn't grab one which I am happy for.

Well here is my question???? If he does turn out to be worth his feed, will neutering him fix this problem??????? I am gonna hunt with a guy that has only females tonight. If he does this to them.....then I think I know what I have to do. I got a good feeling with this dog and I don't say that to often. Thanks allott!!!!

Huh? Paul, are you serious? I would have already taken him out of the gene pool. He is 2 and 1/2 and probably hasn't been hunted...??? Castration might help, but why try it? Why spend time on an inferior dog when there are so many well-bred good prospects around?

Neutering alone will not "cure" an aggresive dog. In most cases it will help but you will still have to work with him as well. It would help to have understanding people with dogs to creat situations where you can correct him. Keep him on leash while meeting other dogs for first time and correct him instantly if he even glances aggresively in another dogs direction. Walk him with other dogs at first so he gets used to seeing other dogs around, once he is not reacting to other dogs then you can try off leash but be ready to step in with sharp word and/or pysical correction. This likly will take a few weeks of working with him... not everyone has the time to spend on somthing like that.

Its worth a shot if he is otherwise a decent dog. Sometimes its not as hard as it looks to turn around an aggresive dog... maybe he just never saw enough dogs while younger. If you like the dog I would atleast try abit before taking the permanent solution.

if you really think he is gonna be something good you can try to takee that out of him. Sounds like he was never taught any manners or that he didn't take to them so that is why you have him at 2 1/2. I would feed him with other dogs and see how he acts, try to set him up to be aggressive any way you can, and when he does, come down on him like you mean it, I mean really MEAN it. It is much better to do this from puppy age, so you might not be able to trust him when you are not there to keep him in line, an he might realize this as well. You may be better off to start with something that you can make into what you want. There is abosolutely no excuse for aggression.

You could try getting him cut, but from what I have read and experienced, if you do it later in the dog's life, it might not make a difference. I have a lab that was extremely hyper-active and I was recommended to get him cut. He was 2yrs old when he got cut, and now he is still as aggrivating as ever. Giving him "what for" will only teach him to behave himself around you. If I were you I would experiment with some other dogs, and if that doesn't work, I think you already know what the answer is. Some dogs just flat out don't like eachother, just like people.

I would take the advice of the previous poster but I would like to add that even if his aggression cannot be fixed, there are some out there that like to hunt and own only one dog. IF he might be something good then maybe you can sell him to one of those people and get a good pup. Just my $.02.

Had two males that face barked each other thru the fence.
They wanted each other real bad.
Bought a cattle prod and new batteries.
Put both dogs in the same pen.
They rolled as soon as put together.
Pushed the button, up the side of one, down the side of the other.
They both thought the other one had done this to each other.
Fight was over then.
Waited a few minutes, bumped them together a few times.
They rolled again. Pushed the button again. Stopped again.
Waited a good while, ended up picking up each dog and putting on top the other.
They rolled again.
Pushed button again.
Could not for the life of me get a fourth match.
Never barked at each other again as long as they lived.

In my opinion: it is too late for castration. take care of it permanently.

A few things to remember about aggressive dogs. ( That I have seen)
If you do some how get him to control his aggressiveness around you that is great but I have seen it about 60%+++ of the time when you walk away he will revert back. Like at a tree or on track or in the kennel. You do not want to be on the receiving end of a P!$$#d off hound hunter because his dog just got chewed up.Also, if he does revert at some point when he is loose in your yard or just got loose and a child is walking another dog by, well you can see where this is going. I think it is our responsibility as hound hunters to control (eliminate) what we hunt or breed.

There are a lot of good dogs out there, don’t spend too much time worrying about the ones that could cause you a lot of problems.

I had to make this same decision about 6 years ago and I did the wrong thing. A male that I had ended up with a guy that said he hunted alone. Some time went buy and the guy decided to hunt with some other people. At the tree, that male tore half the face off another dog.

It is NOT worth it to keep or put time into an aggressive dog....

Thanks y'all for your replies!!!!! My cousin insisted he wanted him back so I gave him back with a good description of what happened and made suggestion to eliminate him! If he hadn't took him back, that is exactely what I was gonna do!

We did try again last night and same story.....even with a female!

I am going to somewhat disagree with many of the opinions here by sharing own. I have seen nutting a dog work wonders for growly dogs. Not all the time but on a good dog you want to hunt, it's worth a try...

I know ya sold that Katie dog but did ya keep track of her, how did she turn out.

Chances are he'll get the chance to ruin some young dogs for ya but hope the cutting works for ya.If he dives into a younger dog it'll probably put 2 on your hitlist.
