Jason I'm pretty sure it is when the stomach actually flips over and twist up the tubes in and out of the stomach and it is painful and severe causing them to die very quickly I'm not sure i have heard of it a lot but never seen it guess it happens in horse to they call it twisted gut hope i never see it first hand not sure if this is 100% true just what i was told hope we never have to find out first hand good luck and sorry for your friends lost Larry

I've heard that it happens mostly in large, deep chested dogs like hounds, mastiff, etc. It can be repaired if caught early. I personally don't feed my dogs before any heavy playing, running or hunting. I've read that they can also get it if they eat RIGHT after playing, etc.

Twisted stomach is when the stomach and other members of the digestive system rotate usually from being just fed and excersized, when the organs "flip" they twist the blood vessels and kink them like a hose. As the blood supply dries up, the organs die as well. THis can be extremely painful for the animal.

been told the same as the last two replys also that it can happen to dogs that run and jump at the tree. Had it happen to my german shepard but got her to the vet in time and they operated and were able to save her they sayed we were luck for it usally damages organs etc pretty fast.

I heard that also the bacteria in the stomach causes bloating and shutting off of the main blood supply along the spinal column.
