I got a question about using terriors or such to go into dens and log piles to pull out coons. The past two nights I've run coons into old beaver dens and my hounds are too big to get at them. I know set trap leave, but we travel a long ways to our hunting spots and don't just get to go back all the time. I just wonder if that is a death sentence for the dog. The slash pile our dogs hit on last night we got one coon out of but could see many others running around in it the pile. It took us 30 minutes to get to the one we shot. So I was just wandering if a little dog could go in there and run them out at least. The slash pile was 20x30 and 10' high.

Just to defend myself a little, the coon wins all spring- summer-fall long when i"m training and keeping my dogs in shape. I do not kill coons that are not prime. In about a month or maybe a week who knows it will be to cold and they don't move to much then. We have had a nice cold spell which should prime up the coons. And we also had permission to go on this guys land because the critters have been doing damage to his feed. We will never get them all nor do we want to. I was just wandering if the things you read about these dogs are true.

Get a good Jagdterrier as they will due the job. My 22 pound female pulled coyotes from culverts, fought badgers and bobcats in holes. Took a few scrapes but big enough to handle these smaller varmits. She is almost deaf, losing her sight and retired at 14 years old.

I have heard from several people that the patterdale terrior is the meanest, baddest little hole dog there is, but I have never hunted with a hole dog.

A guy i got a couple hounds from one time bred patterdale's he had em in 10x50 foot kennels those crazy little bastards would run the full length of that pen all day long barking at anything they saw,maybe it was just the ones he had but they were fricken nuts.

If you are really interested, do some research on a well bred hunting line patterdale or a Jagd terrier. That is exactly what they are uesd for and what a blast. Jajd terrier hunters forum or any other working terrier forum should help.

i know i would go with the patterdale. i own one. he is eight pounds a.d i hog hunt with it. and he is supposed to be a bay dog but he catches every hog i put him on. he was pretty rough untill one bit his leg off now he bays more but he still has more heart drive and hate for game on three legs than any dog i have seen. but more for the topic when he was 5 months old i turned a caged coon loose and put him on it just to see( coon was prob 15 pounds three times his size then) and he caught the coon before it could climb and killed it. i plan on owning more of them

you need a dog that has a little size to him... And eight pounder might not make it out! Dont waste your time, get a jagd or rat terrior. They are the best hunters and viscious when need be

I use a jack russel he's bad @$$ he pulls em right out of the hole and the hounds are off again

using terriers with the hounds is a lot of fun, i hunt patterdales and yes most of the time they will get the coon out of the den or pile or whatever they need to do. I did however hit a bad hole a few weeks ago and dogs brought coon up to me and the coon made it back down the hole. Well dogs wouldn't quit and one dog never came out. These dogs have no quit and will fight to the death. my female is a little smarter and after an a-- beating and a few hours of fighting she will run back and look at me as if she is saying i just cant get him out. But then she runs back in and keeps working. They arent' for everybody. Yes most of the time they will work a coon out fairly quick but they other night i was there at that hole for six hours and lost a good prospect . I prefer a dog with a little more size and butt to pull coon , find a good patt or jagd and give it a try. I am going to try a half pit and half pat blooded dog in the future. Just had a litter of 1/8 pit and 7/8 patt - hope they makes some good ones. Good luck . i see your point on getting them coon. It gets old when winter sets in and you tree in brush piles and holes and you cant get the coon, i don't care what people say here in nebraska there is so many coon when fur is prime and my dogs tree it , and is a nice coon i am going to harvest it. Give a terrier a try i am sure you will enjoy it.

they make collars for the terriers that tell you where in the ground they are and how deep so you dont loose dogs like that, i use them on my jacks, they work well.

Hey I started using Jack Russells to dirt hole and brush pile hunt myself just this year. Yes they will go in after anything you want them to, and bring it out. Or throw them up a tree and they will go inside a den tree as well. Its great, to everyone who says "let the coon win" well this is true we let them win all spring, summer, and fall here in Oklahoma. But come fur season during dec through feb. The terriers bring home the meat! I dont know about Jags and patterdales but beware of some Jack Russells they cary a gene and alot of them are born deaf. Something to keep in mind when looking at pups. Good luck and keep us posted on the success!!!
