Rhodesia Ridgebacks

Has anybody hunted with this breed of hound?? I was told there were some breeders in the NW. Can't say that I have heard of them before. Is anyone using them for any type of hunting?

There was a guy here who tried them for bobcat dogs. As i,m sure you already know they were bred in rodesia africa for lion and leopard hunting. I have read great things about these dogs. however all that I have hunted with were not worth a darn. I think they were a hound just like any other hound at one time. but with show breeding the ones i've seen are just for show. Also the ones That are here local are prone to fight other dogs. My exsperience with this breed is very limited. One positive I can say is they were the most athletic dogs I have ever seen. vertical leap, speed ect.

High Desert Hounds: You mentioned you had very limited experience with the ridgebacks and they were not worth a DARN. Do you feel that was because of their training?? My opinion is they have great athletic ability BUT unfortuneately like a lot of breeds of hounds more emphasis is put on their show and competion abilities as opposed to their Hunting abilities. Still looking for some that are used for hunting . I think they would make great bear and cat hounds if trained right.

Bob as I said earlier they were and are the most athletic dogs I have ever seen. The guy that raised them is a good hound guy and runs a good bobcat pack now with english and black and tans. I believe that the problem was they were from show dog stock and had no brains or drive for hunting. If you can find some that come from multi generational hunting stock then they may very well be the best breed out there. For me it is easier to run traditional dogs than to try and break the mold. I had 2 of these dogs years ago. I ran them with some hounds and they would go with the hounds, but had absolutley no hunting instinct. Might be a chore to find some in this country with enough experience to have developed any hunt drive. Maybe you could start by finding one that had some natural aggression, and channeling that into prey drive. Probably take a while to build any real bloodline that was dependable. JMO.

I would like to thank everyone that chimed in reguarding RR hounds and those that e-mail'd me . From what I gather all the hunting instincts have been bred out of them for show and comp judging that is a shame

I do not know what it is BUT I do seem to steer toward the unusual breedsas far as preference goes I really like the Blueticks, leopards and Majestics. Just my personal preference. I am sure I could get several guy's steering me towards Plotts and walkers for bear ,but I think I can eventually find the right combination for such. I might as well be happy with the breed selection knowing color is not paramount but hey that's me THANKS

Though the breed has been nearly ruined by dog shows (as all hunting breeds are), there are still some breeders of hunting bloodlines.

Ridgebacks were not bred to be large, sight hounds, or catch dogs. They were originally bred to be medium-sized dogs who used their nose to start tracks and bay their game; there are still some breeders loyal to the original intent of the breed...it just takes some effort to find them.

I heard of a guy a while back who had a good one. He said he could catch any kind of game he wanted with it. Like Rifleman said you have to find a breeder who is breeding for hunting and not for the show ring. You have to look at the beagles. You can find beagles every where but the majority are now show dogs There are still a lot of beagles out there that are true hunting dogs but you cant take one out of the show ring and go and try to catch a rabbit with it.

well in my opiniona ridgeback is more like a cur, the ones i have hunted with were hog and cow dogs and were silent trailing gritty cold nosed dogs.there was a link on baydog.com but i have seen them take 10 and twelve hour old cow and hog tracks
