Fences are a tuff a deal and with those you are hemmed up most of the time. Some mules jump pretty good but I don't know if that's an option. That little 99 in 22-250 is a honey and you and I both know it's good for a lot of things and mine as sure taken some big old bucks over the years too.
Ice? Bad news for the rider I deal with it a lot. I have my farrier put dabs of tungsten carbinde crystals on my hores's shoes. It has to be done ofter the shoe is shaped and these sticks of drill tech. same thing they hard band drill pipe with in the oilfield are melted and dabbed in four places on the shoe. They won't slip with this even on rocks covered with ice.
I had a bad canyon that had what we call a weeping spring in it, and it would run out across the trails and freeze like a skating pond on an angle . Killer to try to ride a horse across or even walk across on foot.Big tom lion use to make that canyon and go right up over them ice skids and rim out. He held me up a couple of times and I puckered even thinking about it and could just feel the wright of a horse slamming down on me sideways and slipping off of there.; I have had horses fall on me before and it has never been pleasant. First year I learned about this drill tech from a houndman and feed lot rider in North Dakota I had them shod up with it. About the 3rd. time in there we hit old Tom again and sure enough he made his run up over the ice slides. I was still a bit chicken so I led old Gus across them and heck he was walking them better than me, so I should have rode. Anyway we got across made a few miles and got him jumped and treed. Got some good photos of him and figured if I had a friend who wanted him we would take him the next time becasue he was a hog. Ha! Never saw his track in there again. I guess he figured we had him in there and time to change deals but after cutting him there for two years after that never again. Oh well at least we didn't have a horse wreck and got a picture of his smiling face. LOL!
