this is kind of a dumb question, but why do you guys think it takes so much work to get a hound to run cats the way you want them to but it seems to only take one time for them to run deer. some dogs seem to truely love to chase deer while they are only average on the game you want them to chase.

They were bred for 200o years to run deer, and this tree climbing game thing is relatively new. It's hard to turn those genes off.

Most of the time a lion track is a cold track, or semi-cold and a hound has to learn to coldtrail whereas the jumped deer thing is a hot track. Not nearly as much of a learning curve or skill to running a hot track as there is in moving a cold one.......

In my experience I think it is more that they jump the deer and are not trailing them so to speak. As soon as they see the deer bolt it is game on. I think this is the case with majority of off game races. My Scarlett dog is a pretty honest dog when it comes to chasing off game, but if she is out running around and sees or hears a squirrel chatter at her she will try to tree it. This doesn't bother me too much as it shows the dog has the desire to hunt. It is when they don't chase any game good or bad that you should rethink what kind of dog you have.

that is the same why i think on that last post. It takes a good trained dog not to run off game that right in front of it
