i was just woundering if a bear gets a hold of your hound real good, then more than likely will your hound be bear whooped for good? and if this does happen is it a good idea to lay up your hound for awhile and for how long?
thanks, mike.

Not that I am an expert by any means but I think it more or less depends on the dog in question.....I have had some that have gotten beat up perdy good and as soon as they are healed up they go right back to work but I also have seen and heard of young dogs getting caught by a bear that chases and that perdy much was the end of their Bear Hunting days because they either stand in the road and bark when turned out from then on.... or when a bear is caught and bayed they will hang way back and just bark without ever getting too close to the bear.
Everybody is different in the way they handle their young dogs just like every young dog is different ......I honestly can not remember one that we have fed that we had to eliminate because it got bear whipped....more often than not ...just speaking in our case mind you..... the Bear takes care of that for us ....(though I have terminated quite a few for other reasons)
My advice would be if this has happened to you would be to get the dog back out as soon as possible after such an incident as you described and find out what it will do and if it is showing signs of being intimidated or fear...... put that dog up for the next 2 or 3 trips you make with your hounds, alot of time just the fact that you are loading other dogs right in front of it and leaving that one home is enough to flip that switch they seem to have hidden in their danged heads some place.
But again I am no expert by any means, and what ever happens for you, we wish you the best.

we have had it happen both way.....a half ass dog has turned great after a good butt whooping and then a great (seemly) dog wouldn't ever run another bear again.
I think it all depends on the dog.

I don't get to hunt big game here with hounds but in general situations I'd say Easttengator has it right. It comes down to the attitude and grittiness of the dog. Some dogs, even shy dogs will come back with a strong desire to get vengeance on something that has hurt them and some sort of curl up inside and become timid and cautious. It's like with a dog that has been abused-it will either become afraid of people or it will become vicious but I don't think there is a way to predict the outcome. You can try to direct the dog's attitude a bit to give it confidence.

Here is somethinng i learned the other night...has nothinng to do with getting whooped but ...it might help.
Just got a dog that will rig and open good on a lead.I have been hunting with a almost 2 year old hound that wouldnt. put them on the same lead and walked to a bear track. The one dog opened and kept it up so i petted her for like 5 minutes and told her what a good dog she was,i wouldn't touch the other dog ....well he opened once and i petted him for a quick minute and went back to the dog that kept opening then he opened more and more and then I petted them equally. I sent the dog that knew to open and let her trail the track. But everytime the other dog opened I made a big deal of it to him.
Last night I was out moving him from one house to another to run this weekend and I opened on the truck.I stopped and low and behold I found a bear track. So it has helped make him a better dog.
Will it work on one that got whooped not sure.
But there is my extra 2 cents

the year befor last one of the good old dogs in the pack got beat about with in an inch of his life.....they put him together in the feild and headed to the vet....dog couldent even get up....two days later the fella had the dog layen in the back of his pick up....he pulled up to the bear tree...(it was rate off of the road)....the bear bailed....started fighten dogs....that old dog ended up out of the truck and tried to get in the fight (now he couldent get up for two day)...one of the fellas cought him befor he got to the bear...he was hobblen, and howlen....that poor dog was in rough shape to begin with....that old dog died that winter.....he was a real humdinger......i guess it all just depends on the dog...

I do think it depends on the dog... I probably wouldn't lay them up.. Unless they just don't want to run a bear after that..
I don't have bear dogs and don't pretend to.. My dog was whooped pretty darn good 2 weekends in a row when he was a pup.. Pretty much cured him of wanting to pull hair.. He will still run and tree one.. But the only time he grabs is when another dog is getting worked over... He is by no means a leader when it comes to stopping one... and only jumps in when there is no other option.... He has gotten eaten up by lions more then once in his life... Seems to have a bigger desire for them... He has a littermate brother who I would call a real beardogs.. He has been whooped within a couple inches of his life more then once... He is always ready for more....

I have a female B&T, she was raised with one other dog, when we turned her loose one the first bear of the season she went with the pack, and then came back, and wouldn't leave our sight, when we got to the bear, we had it in a cave, she went right in and took a liking to it, well the bear turned on her and she took off out of there like a bolt of lightning, I tied her up and she was still barking at it from a distance, but now she will not stay with the pack, at all, you get her to a bear tree and she will stay there but not do anything? Is it the 12-15 dogs, the bear beat the crap out of her, or the breed?
