lookin for a coon to start my dog on in central oregon

Postby huntsforfood » Sun Jan 11, 2009 4:00 am

hello ive got a 6 mo old walker blue tick thats ran three drags and is doing awsome, he even treed the third drag yey :D the only thing is he isnt barking on trail or tree and i think he needs to see somthin alive to fire him up a bit... if anyone has a coon in central oregon that i can run a drag with and a roll cage that would be great, or even better yet one to release and shoot down to him. i am new to hound hunting and would love to meet some local houndsman to run with, i am lucky to have a two friends with pups and my girlfriends mom runs hounds in prineville. thanks a ton

Sorry it took so long to get out! You definately have a 'keeper' and had a great time! Hope you guys can make it to some trials also this year! Think you would have a great time! We'll get them dogs back out to 'exersize' and get in shape again soon! (by the way his pup is the one on the right!)

track down Wes York in Prineville, he maybe able to help with the coon work , he would also know of the field trial coming up, I went to the one they had there last and it was pretty good.

I know Wes and his family well! Shoot...did not meet you there I guess! They say we are going to have one for certain again this year...I guess I better make some more calls and see for sure! You coming this round if so? I dropped my poor pup with older dogs....she came in last but she did come in! Made it to 3 round, then put her in puppy race...30 min later...she came in 5th there. Not a well bred pup so I was pretty happy.
That pup in the pics I posted 9 mo old and he kicked butt! (he is the one on the right)
Well hopefully we will meet soon or at next trials close? Do you go to Ukiah trials?

No, I didn't make that race, I did here at the Elk Creek field trial something about some problems that came up from that race but no details just something about going to court about it, I've tried to make all the races in Oregon for last couple of years back to the last two Iron Dogs and the one's that Wes's uncle Ted put on in La Grand.

Well heck I made it to those also! Still not sure who you are! I will say my pup sucked at Ukiah...came in on the 4 wheeler and begged Ted and Wes not to charge me for gas!
Maybe I will meet you there this year! Still gonna give Clay a call and find out what is going on in set up with trials here this year!

Oh and I have been to Iron dog....sorry but just my opinion and a TOTAL set up! I'll never go back and I did not even have hounds to run there....Guys are nice...but ya...a dog comes in 15 min before others...and just happens to be the one that does the drags...whatever....not impressed at all there....JMO....

we had the same thoughs about the Iron dog also, at there last one my Wyatte dog got runner up over all and my Hank dog was 1st & 1st in the 2nd div. water race, When you asked about the race in Ukiah I was thinking Yereka in Ca.
Hope they get some races going I talked to Ryan Davidson and he heard that Johnny Young was going to put on his race againthis year.

At Iron dog did you notice a long legged tan and white hound, ribs standing out and you could count coming in like a bullet? That is what I saw in every race they entered him in...I realize there are great trial dogs...but that was so obvious and rediculous that the dog already knew the drag whether it was bear or coon...oh and also our dogs ended up with lice from there...talk about a pain in the butt to treat!
On a good note though we stopped at Crater Lake that I had never been too and awesome!
Not sure how my dogs will do at trials this year but hoping to get to a few! It's great to at least get out, camp, relax, meet new people and still run dogs! :) Even better if my kids go with their pup this year!

In this forum under the clubs for Oregon there should start posting the races as they come up also Nora Cook would know what's coming up.

And at the Iron Dog it was a little to easy to see what was going on.
