The dog started to have some discomfort near his rear itching it and licking it to begin with.
Then as time has passed the hair fell off and the area has become a sore that he keeps licking.
1.What is it?
2. How can I treat it?
Heres some pictures of it, its on the left side of his butt.

I have found that Medicated Bag Balm works or Neosporin. I have seen this start out a like an in-grown hair and it kinda festers. This may not be the case as I am not vet but neither of the two will hurt to try from what I can see.

That looks to me like a ruptured anal gland. I'm sure it had a blockage, abcsessed then ruptured. You might be able to get it to heal back up. But I can bet it's going to abcess again.
Needs to be flushed out, a drain put in it, and put on some antibiotics.
Or have the gland removed.

mike.years back i had a plott dog get hit in the ribs by a bear. his wound never did heal properly.about one month later he developed a sore that broke open from the inside out. it ended up being a staph infection. the spot on your dog reminded me of this old dog as his was on the hair line close to the same spot, even though he was hit in the ribs his sores would open up any place on his body. larry sowa the cur guy from oregon is also a top vet, he actually used the staph itself to create a culture that is used to treat this nasty infection. i would at least get a vet to determine what it is. i doctored my dog for two years before we had him free of this infection. some dogs aren't worth all the trouble, this plott ran every day like that for two years ? i hope this is just a sore. good luck! mike martell

One thing you might try using to clean out is epson salt. I had one of my females draw in cheat grass while in heat and developed a couple of pretty good sores. I had to clean daily with epson salt and keep open. I also once a week used neosporin but the only issue I had with that was it would close up the sore and I knew there was still something in there and would have to reopen and drain. It took about 7 weeks of daily cleaning and draining but finally it worked it's way out on it's own. If you can afford a vet I would get it checked. But I've found for years you can't beat epson salt in cleaning a wound or drawing out infection whether it be a person or a dog.

Good luck
