I used to know an old timer that made his own dog food. Does anyone do this or have a recipe?

I have a buddy that raises Staforrds and they would cook a whole turkey and debone it and mix it with cooked rice and that is what they fed their show dogs and bitches. Also know people that feed raw chicken and cooked rice and corn. With the price of dog food I would think that alot more people are going to resort to making their own dog food.

i have read the stuff on the other site, does anyone think that grinding this bowl of food will be better than feeding the complete chicken leg or quarter without grinding it. as i am considering this feeding regimend but would like to think that grinding might help the digestive system of the dog and also be easier to feed as you can prepare more and just serve by weight to each dog.

I have also checked the raw diet out on coondawgs.com, in the process of stocking up on "goods" for a raw diet. I was feeding my dogs Natural 26 dog food-dog food is getting too expensive!
We're playing around with it a bit, taking some advice from our local veternarian about the raw diet. But they are all for it. The biggest concern seems to be making sure they get all the vitamins they need, which can be purchased cheap.
And our vet also recommends non-cooked meat as its less likely to splinter and cause problems with digestion. And buying the meat local, as to not get any contaminated meat, which could potentially cause problems with a raw diet.
I think its a great way to go, I don't think from all the research I've done on it, there is any one rule to follow. If you research it enough you'll figure out whats best for your dogs and the cheapest way for you, it is a bit of work so you'll want to be prepared to put in all the effort it will require.
This has definately become a hot topic in my area, so good luck to ya if you decide to try it.

I too have been looking into this and havn't yet come to a great solution. In all the info that I have read I havn't heard anything about eggs. I've got chickens and if I start feeding them to the hounds I will soon run out of chickens, but if I use the eggs, I will have an indefinate supply.....and I've got to feed the chickens anyways. My dogs seem to like it if I crack an egg on top of their present dog food. I was wondering if I could use a cheaper brand of dog food and just add some egg to it. What do you think?

I'm not sure about the shell but on www.dogfoodanalysis.com they like egg over egg products. Their is talk about the egg yolk but when feed with the egg white it should be fine. Just my thoughts.

I have been adding meat with my dry dog food for the last 6 weeks but I'm concerned about messing up the balance of the dry dog food and wondering if the dogs are getting the right amount of vitamins ect... (since I am only feeding half the recommended amount)
