Well I was looking to get a new yard dog havent had one in several years just hounds I normally keep a bulldog a a yard dog but thought I would try something different this time with all the slack they get now days so I ended up with a year old black lab was told he was great with kids etc... well the day after I got him I had the day off work and was at the parents house well they have 2 foster kids ones 3 the other 4 they had played all day with the dog then about 4 oclock we are out in the yard I literaly turn my back the 4 year old screams I turn to see her holding her hand so i grab it to look not realizing what had happened and then see th blood running down my arm from her hand so I holler for my mom to get her needless to say the dog didnt last but about 2 seconds after that so spent the rest of the day and part of the next with her at hospital and then had to have the dog sent off etc etc so my first experience with a lab left me with a sour taste in my mouth I reckon I will leave the yard dogs alone for a while but when I do get another its back to bulldogs

Personnally I hate labs. Show me one that doesn't growl. I had one bit my daughter 15 years ago when she went to pet him. It was owned by a guy I knew. I walked over to my truck and put a bullet in his head in less then a minute. I have no use for any growly dog. I think they've been way over bred and it's cost them some major temperment problems.

Tonylee, I grew up on a ranch, always had cattle dogs around, ours and the neighbors. I started in with Bulldogs as a teen, and kept them for decades, never had a problem with one, except for when the cattle dogs would pick a fight. All the kids in the neighborhood knew to stay clear of everyones cattle dogs, but the bulldogs were everyones buddies.
All my kids learned to climb up on the couch by standing on a bulldogs head, and not only wouldn't they growl, most of the time they wouldn't even wake up for it. I raised 4 hellion boys with three bulldogs and never heard one growl, unless a strange dog got near. I have brothers that still keep them, none of us have ever had a rank bulldog, some didn't like adult strangers, but if it was a strange kid it never mattered, all were got as pups, and raised/slept with the kids, and acted just like one of them.
My youngest brother raises Labs. I wouldn't let a kid out of the car until he put them all in the kennel. I have no use for the SOB's at all, sorry about the kid, and I believe you're right on about getting another Bulldog pup.

I would have to say your first mistake was trusting a year old dog that you don't really know around kids. I don't trust ANY dog that i don't know around my kids. would you trust a year old bull dog that you didn't know around your kids? i have owned both breeds of dogs in question and have to say that they are and were both great family dogs. maybe you should get a pup next time, you might have better luck. sorry about the kid.

My little sister is doing good it didnt do any major damage they tough her hand was brike but after xrays they found out it wasnt it is black and blue and she has some pretty nasty gashes on her palm but she will be ok ....... I will never own or suggest a lab to anyone after this crap the dog actually grew up with another little girl she is 3 and then did this my first mistake was not getting a bulldog because of the heat they get the next dog will be a bulldog (yard dog that is) I agree that labs are WAY over bred and that is probably the cause of the temperment problem..... Kind of a funny story that happened at work I mentioned it to a guy at work he of course tried to defend labs because he has 3 said she must have hurt him for him to have bit i told him i was standing there and it didnt matter dog still should not have but in a rather pissed tone then he said well i trust my 3 with anybody the want ever bite then went on to say the only people my dog ever bit was one of them bit my nighboor and one bit me I could not help but laugh lol

Working in a Vet office in the "country" area I do, I think 60% of our patients are Labs or Goldens. I myself have never seen such ignorant dogs. Out of all of them about half are the dumbest dogs I've ever seen, and the other half are the meanest I've ever seen. Just had a 4 mo Lab pup come in for shots, it was bound to eat us up. The owner thought it was playing, it does that with her 4 kids.
My Mom's always raised bulldogs. Since before I was born. I was raised by one. Once she started getting other breeds, and back into hounds, she said it was the only time she ever had to worry about one of us getting bit, with the bulldogs she knew it was safe.

Cass,
I think you hit on a very important point. The magnitude of the ill bred Labs. and Goldens among the most populer breeds in the country is HUGE.
Now I will defend the noble labrador breed as a whole. When properly bred, socialized and trained these dogs can be one of the most useful and committed of all. But stop and look at the huge diversity you see in the breed. From the lumbering 130 pound ice breakers as we call them that look more like their Newfoundland roots that they do an agile working or hunting breed. Then you have the highly wound up super speedy field trail dogs, and then you have the well proportioned AKC standard show dogs, and then you have the labs that are breed like rabbits so idiots can sell them on the street corners or in the Nickel ads and make money for more crank because when it's puppy time they sell even better than pit bull pups.
Don't blame the breed blame the breeders.
I have hunted, competed with and enjoyed Labradors nearly my whole life. They are dogs and if they are bred improperly, not socialized properly and not trained and expercised they become a problem.
My current Lab. Tuggs Rippin Cajun better know as Tugg Be Bugs Be is gentile, attentive, extremely trainable. Excellent on pheasants, duck, quail, pretty good on bobcats, coons, and lions. He is terrified of Canadian Geese. He is a very devoted family dog and he knows his place in the family and in the hound pack. I treat him no different than I do the hounds and they all get along fine.
Some of the other breeds I have seen that are questionable due to poor breeders are. Cocker Spaniels, many of the puppy factory toy breeds are very messed up, as are the giant breeds like the St. Bernard, and they Great Dane. The drug dealers dogs of choice are generally pretty screwed up due to theircomplete lack of breeding ethics so you can count in Pit Bulls, Rotts, and Dobies because they look mean and keep people away from your place when you are hiding out tweeking and geeking. Not that they are all mean they suffer from hyper anxiety, physical abnormalities and other things that make them a huge pain in the butt.

The difference is when a pit bites someone the victim is a lot more likely to be severly injured or disfigured or dead. I don't care much for labs but I've never heard of one killing a kid.

I have seen and heard of lots of cockers biting people. My mom had one that bit my cousin when we were kids. I have to agree with derekE. I have never herd of lab killing a kid. You here about pits ripping the shit out of people all the time.

Most of you guys have kennels full of potentual great house and yard dogs. Unless you need a speciality dog for bird hunting ect why not take one of your hounds and let it run the yard, play with the kids and sleep in the house. At least this way ya could have the best of both worlds a duel purpose dog. Great pet plus take it hunting. I sold all my dogs but my female due to spine problems. I moved her into the house and she is as good a pet dog as any lab ever could be. Even though shes not hunting she has a good quality of life not out just rotting in the kennel. Id say in most cases you dont have to look further then your backyard kennels to find your next pet. Take one of your old dogs that you feel has earned the right to enjoy the rest of there life. jmo dgarrett
