mac, the old rule of thumb out west. if the buzzards have returned the bears are moving. on the coast they are only dormant,in and out most all winter.the old biological clock is messed up,inland i never found a bear moving before march 1, however the odd warm start to winter, i have found them in the snow cat hunting as late as mid december. many variables depending on your region.in the mountain country of n.e. oregon by mid to late november as a rule you can free cast a dog on cats and generally not find a single bear moving .these are patterns i followed all through the 70's until i quit hunting oregon in 1994 after the ban.

In my exp. when the grass starts growing and it starts to get warming up, the bears will start to come out, but stay around there den for a bit, and then when the PLUG is gone, they bust out the Nikes and the race is on. They are out here, a guy just has to go walk a canyon on a warm day. I have heard of two sets of tracks so far, but there hasn't been snow for a while till this week. Good Luck

Up here the rule of thumb is if the chipmunks are out the bears are out. This year I have seen a few chipmunks but not a bear track and my season started on the first.
