A friend and I were out the other day under a lion tree and the lion came down before we finished shooting video and taking photos. Anyway, I had five of my male dogs under the tree and they all got pretty wild when the lion started down. The tree was next to a little set of ledges and we stood eye level with the cat; some of the dogs were at the base of the tree while others were up there with us. One of those dogs up there with us was my black plott dog Maverick.......

Well, that three year old Maverick dog of mine fires pretty darn hard and when the lion started down the tree he attempted one of his pile drive, home run type deals that is typical of a plott and bailed the hell off that ledge for the lion. But in his haste he missed and hit that tree head on and I'll swear that tree wiggled around abit and I thought it was gonna fall over........lol!

Damn if ol' Maverick didn't bounce off and back after that lion without even shaking his head? We got to talking about the deal on the way home and wondered if I should change his name to Ol' Bama because of his missile like attack on that lion....so what do you think!

hell ya thats a hell of name for that dog. gotta love them hammer headed fools like that tho got a couple like that myself that i really dont know how they make it thru bear season each year but by damn they do.

He'll dive bomb them as well Stitch, cause he likes the bear just as well. I ran down a problem bear for DWR a couple years back and they had a guy there to shoot it. The hunter shot the bear and down it came like it was done, so I cut Maverick in to the kill and he ran in on the fly, jumped into the air and dive bombed that thing. Well, shortly after he mounted that bear it came back to life--must had only knocked the bear out for a minute and all hell broke loose. But that young dog is true to his breeding and for sure pile on when things go to the ground.......

Ike, what bloodline is that plott.he is a good looking dog. he favors my pocahontas male a lot.he would catch a wild boar @ 9 months old,he new no fear. by the way do you know the area that utah fish and game is advertising as newly opened for spring bear pursuit.i think it said la sal area.last summer i hunted the area at monticello,ut.i think it was called manti la sal. is this new area the forest service just east of moab.

I got that plot dog from a guy over in Colorado who bred a Shamrock top and bottom female plot dog to a Weems/Shamrock and produced a litter that this dog came out of. I'm not a student of the plot dog or their breeding, but I'm told that the Shamrock hounds were breed to make those eastern bears climb cause they like to back up to a tree and fight. Anyway, thanks for the compliment and he is not only a good looking dog but handles and fires well as well............

I loaded up the hounds today and a friend and went hunting again. Yesterday would have been the easy day with fresh snow but I chose to stay home thinking there would be too many dog boxes in the field.

Found a regular sized female track just after daylight and drove on past looking for something a little better. As luck would have it, I cut a really nice track down the road and sent the hounds. Long story short, the trail lead into where a guy had started a female yesterday and I got all my dogs off the track but two, Kody and Griz went on.

Well, those two young guns took advantage of a chance to shine and went and put that lion up in a place eagles soar. And I might say those two were treed up as hard as I've ever seen them treed in the four years they've been hunting. No pictures on this one, as I forgot my wings and went light...

But it was a great day in the field with friends, the sun out, no wind, some of that wet snow gone and another lion up--how does life get any better than that.

(more) I had a friend want to show me a dog today and so we went back and looked at it. The dog was a big red dog with a little white on his chest and the tips of his toes, and was about the same age as my Kody and Griz dogs. Well you probably guessed it, yea, that big red dog is a litter mate brother to those two dogs and he's come home to the Basin. Those dogs were out of a female from LionHeart and Ike that was crossed to my blue Ryan dog. A guy just never knows I guess.

Ike I really like the looks of your Plott, Shamrock and Weems are very good blood. Looks like he is doing a good job and treeing hard. Sounds like you had a good winter. Good luck on the Bear hunt.

Thanks guys, and yes the dogs and I have had a pretty good winter and found lion tracks on every trip whether it was dirt or snow. However, the fun time is upon us and that dirt is raising making a track look like it was left in the snow. The dogs and I'll be out most of the spring, summer and fall so life is good..........

Maverick is alot better looking, and when he opens his mouth he sounds better even though Maverick doesn't need a telepromter. Not to mention he his more intelligent then OL'bama.
