I have a 1 1/2 year old female I tried to breed to a friends 8 year old male. The stud dog was here for a week, and they knotted up at least 3 times. No pups. We both would like to make this cross, what now? My question is what is the feasibility of having a stud dog tested? How likely is it the female? Seems more likely it would be the stud as he is older but not to old I don't think? It was her 3rd heat cycle. I don't think she was ever pregnant (not like she absorbed them or anything) Can females be tested more easily than males? Would like to figure out which of the two dogs is the problem before wasting more time...thanks for any thoughts.

any good vet can check the male to see if he is producing live sperm. cost is not much... if he is fertile then it would indicate the female is having problems..... there is a way to get the female to "drop eggs", but a good many vets will not go thru the procedure-- a lot of them abide by the teachings that it is best to spay and neuter all dogs.

you might want to check the female for low thyroid levels which can cause fertility problems.that test ran about $50....and the office visit was $35----
there is no way other than trial that I am aware of to test the female

Get the stud dog tested.Its cheap and at eight years old it is very possible that he has either started or is developing sperm that are what my vet jokingly calls "old dog semen".This means the sperm will develope a polyp between the body and the tail its like putting a weight on them.Although they can still successfully breed everything will have to be right,such as,as cool as possible,progestren test female to make sure your breeding on the most fertile day(s).Good luck but that is were I would start.
