Just kidding on the previous post. Whip his butt everytime he leaves a cat track and comes back to check on you, either he will get the hint or not.
I had a great snow lion dog that I started hunting on dry ground that would do the same thing. A great tree dog but he would not stay on a dry ground track with the other dogs when the going got tough, he finally learned to stay with them with enough ass whippings and he was great once they had him jumped would take over the track.

Good luck!

You got to forgive old Big N Blue he is a bit giddy these days cuz he is headed out to catch the killer lion of the Cotulla Thicket. We will see how much sage advice he has for us when he gets back. Maybe he can tell us a bit more about them butt whippins. LOL!

The butt whipping thing is funny cause it worked for me once. I had a mostly open ground track on a lion and walked along with a couple old dogs and a yearling of mine to make sure that young dog finished it's first lion track. We started that track around 8:00 AM, it was slow and around 1:00 or 2:00 PM that young dog quit and came to stand beside the old man. Well, it kinda pissed me off cause the only reason I went along was for him. I gave him a little boot in the butt and a cussing and he went back down and got with those two older dogs, and just in time I might ad cause about then they jumped that lion.

I also walked down a bobcat track one time for four hours trying to get a buddies dog to stay put on a track. My LionHeart was after that cat and my buddies bitch would quit and come back like she always did, so I'd leash her and walk on down the track. In a few hundred yards she would want to hunt again and I'd send her only to have her quit again. But after a few hours of that that bitch went and stayed so good luck.......
