Hi new to the sight and hound hunting. i am looking to start building a pack (not right now but in a year or so) so i thought ide start asking alot of questions. It seems most don't really run dogs on deer but our property is pretty thick and steep so it helps. I saw a post of uncle festers about his deer hounds but other than that i cant seem to find a whole lot mostly due to the search telling me im being to vague. cant imagine the terms deer dogs and or hounds coming up to offen on a hound hunting sight :?:

I havn't found too much else where on the net either mostly posts about breaking beagles of running deer. all i have really come up with is what i know from experiance and i ran into a local guy that breeds (mostly for him self when he needs more) BeagleXFox Terriers, which actually my dads dad tried back in the day but i guess the dogs just didn't think of each other that way??? im not really sure how that works but it was before my time so i can't say first hand maybe one of em was a dud?

any way i would also like to get some real hounds to chase bears/pigs and basically any thing else i can find. i know its not that easy as i dont want trashy dogs that will chase anything that moves. i would hunt my wifes jack/yorkie mix if thats what i was after (shes a mean lil $#!T all 9lbs of er)

would it be a horrible idea to incourage a hound to run deer also? i could see it being good during deer season as ive always got a bear tag and usually pig tags also (not that we have pigs on our property but...) but once deer season closes and it all about bears i could see it just taunting me having them chase up every huge buck i couldnt find during season.

thanks for what ever thoughts you have on this the new guy

When I was in highschool my buddy and I crossed a beagle with a wire fox terrier. Came out looking like wire haired beagles. Ugly as sin but tough. A local deer hunter took two pups. Said they made the best deer hounds he has ever had. Swore they learned to tell the diff between a buck and a doe. Don't know how true it was. The third one we kept and named him Bondo. He would tree coon and bear.
As far as running a hound on deer and bear I think you would run into some problems. First there are so many deer around your hound would be chasing them instead of deer. Its very common to jump deer during a bear race and have young dogs break over. Second you wouldnt be able to hunt with anyone as they wouldnt want your dogs teaching theirs to chase deer. If you are going to get a deer dog just use him for deer and deer only.

agree deer dogs should only be for deer.
if you use dogs that run silent & only open when they see the deer you'll get more shots on the deer. also if you use smaller slower dogs the deer won't run as hard & will be easier to hit.
