I went out last night after it cooled down and the first thing I found after stepping into the woods were a nice pair of copper heads. They weren't happy to see me either. I killed them and went on my way with the hair still raised on my neck. I got to the tree and one of my dogs wasn't treeing with the rest but, instead had his butt to the tree digging at his head. I got up to him and he had been bit by a copper head that was still setting there. I killed it and checked on him then leashed everyone up and went to the house. He was starting to swell so I gave him a bynadril (sp). This morning his head was swelled but he was active lively and even ate and drank infront of me. He must have not got it to bad. I believe I will have some snake chaps by the end of the weekend.

Time to train those dogs off snakes, if he got bit in his head more than likly he sniffed it or even tried to bite it. Could have been accidental as well, just bad luck to have it at the base of a treed critter.
We have 11 differnt kinds of rattler in this county plus many other non-poisonous snakes I find it best to break them off all snakes.
Catch the next one alive and put it into a dubble cage so the dogs can't get close enough to get bit. Then give them corrections if they start looking interested in it.
Got my dogs so that they will bark from a 5-10 feet distance if they locate a rattler and its also predy funny to watch them walk in tall grass where a snake has been in the last few mins
Dogs can still get bit even if they are trained off snakes but its going to be an accidental bite and more than likly on a leg. With those noses unless the dogs are totaly distracted by game they will know there is a snake about.

I live in Texas and I am killing snakes evey day, killed one the other day under one of my dog's house. The only reason I looked under the dog house cause that dog was on the end of the chain just sitting there so i looked and there he was. But I catch them and sew there mouth shut and then let the dogs play with them and do some training. It really works well like they say watching your dogs go though some grass where a snake is and the dogs scatter out. really funny cause they are doing everything to get out of dodge

Had a bitch bitten by a rattler last Fri. morning. She is going to be okay as she had had the rattlesnake vaccine. I am sure she was bitten trying to get a coon out from under a big rock as it hit her in an unusual location. Upper neck, below chin area. She did not see the snake as you can't melt and pour her over one as a rule. She does get a little worked up over a coon in a hole.
Adios,
Gary

I went out to feed monday morning and found my samson pup had been bit on the side by a big mohave rattlesnake, the snake was in the kennel. I loaded him up and got him to the vet in a hurry, he couldn't save him. That damn snake sounded like a sprinkler he was so worked up. My kennel now has 1/4" wire around it. I wish i would have done that before that pup got killed.

Bird netting around the bottom foot of a kennel will help alot with snakes. For some reason they crawl into it and can't get back out. I'm not sure if it suffocates them or what exactly happens but it kills them.
