I just got a call that my female in heat was bred by a male who slipped his collar. Is there any way to prevent the pregnancy that isn't hard on the dog. I hate to loose her for kill season in September, I had planned on trying this cross eventually but during the off season so it's not the end of the world if she takes I was just hoping since we caught it early there was something we could do to stop it. I guess my next question is, is any body looking for some pure bred plotts both parents are good bear dogs!

You can (if your vet doesn't object) get a shot to make them abort.. There is a big huge debate on if you should or shouldn't, but, call your vet, ask the questions, get the answers to the risks involved and make your decision.. And it has to be done in a certain time frame (something like 48 to 72 hours)

I had a vet do that one time.......cost me $40.00........she only had 8......wonder how many it would have been without the shot????.....I told the vet and his response was "NUTHINS PERFECT".

1 cc of Lutalyse will abort 'em. Gotta give it within a couple of days, I think. Don't know how dangerous it is for the dog but I've seen it done quite a few times and it always worked. She sometimes still bags up a little.

I guess we are going to have the litter my vet said it's harder on the dog to try to not have them. Has anyone ever run a pregnant dog? can I still hunt her for a while or does that pose a health risk?

pregnant dogs hunt the same in my experience. Obviously once she physically shows of pregnancy then you gotta leave her at home. Or not. Some folks will hunt their pregnant female with titties and bellies A swinging. I leave em at home.

Only vet in this area that will give the shot is a coonhunter............Restarts their heat all over again..........He said he only gives the dogs 1 shot in their lifetime.

I'll never have the shot given again to any females..........the dog was never the same after the shot mentally..........I have seen others say the same.

Thats pretty much what my vet told me and they wouldn't do it, I'm glad it was a good cross, they are both pure bred plotts and both good dogs so we'll see what we get. It's just going to be a bummer of a kill season without my top dog. I guess my pups will get a chance come September.

As for running a pregnant female, I got a pup from a guy who kept running their momma till two weeks before she popped. Never missed a tree he said, she had twelve and kept them all. Never been in a spot to do it and have heard it's a bad practice? It just depends on you.

running a pregnant female is like anything else use some common sense, I use to run mine on coon when they were pregnant, thinking with a slower pregnant female who doesnt track as fast as typical what could go wrong. well one night a pregnant female of mine caught a coon on the ground and got tore up pretty good, no harm to the pups but I got there pretty quick to break it up maybe if I didnt she would have gotten scratched up in the belly bad enough to hurt the pups. Now I do drags to keep them working, and a caged coon. I also do the roll cage with her some and then with her and the pups when they are ready. but I dont turn the females lose any more when they are pregnant not smart especially on bear, lion, boar or anything that can put a hurten on a healthy non pregnant hound.

Hate to hear bout your accident! But on the bright side you can still hunt her! I hunted female one time up until 5 days before she dropped pups and he did great. Also know of a dog that treed a bear had a pup off to the side out of harms way treed a lil more and well you get it! I don't reccomend it! But she'll be fine! It'll make it easier on her o keep her in shape!
