when and how often should you worm your dog??? I have a 5 mth old pup that has been wormed twice and just got a three mth old, the 3 mth old has only been wormed once. should I worm them both again or just the 3 mth old. then how often after do you worm....

Might not be necessary to worm your dogs on a regular schedule. With worm infestations from tapeworn, roundworm and hookworm keeping watch on your dogs stool, and appearance will often alert you that they need worming.

If your dogs are not around other dogs very often you may never need to worm them again.

If you live in an area where dogs are susceptable to heartworm...and you keep your dog on ivermectin as a heartworm preventative it will keep your dog free of most worms.

My dogs are not around other peoples dogs very often and they seldom need worming...some never do. Currently, I do not keep my dogs on heartworm preventative because, so far...the only dogs I ever had with heartworm were shipped here from the south. In 35 years here it has not happened.

Dogs get worms from eating raw meat and parasites too. Your dogs should be wormed at least annually anyway. Beagles who catch and eat rabbits are often wormed monthly.

I worm mine once a month with Ivermectin 1%
1/2 cc per dog

true keep dietary control of your dogs to prevent infestation of certain parasites as well as do not worm "regularly" unless it is for heart worm this cause resistance to the agent used to "deworm" which is definetly not a good thing. Heart worm needs to be done regularly due the vector of disease transmission (mosquitoes). Raw pork will give tape worms so if you give pork cook it all the way.

thanks, my older pup is on heart worm meds but i haven't got the little one on it yet. but from what i have read heart worm meds pretty much keep tham clean. i will have my little pup an the meds asap and will just keep a lookout for worms and theat as needed.....

I worm my dogs every 6 months at the start of fall and in the summer time. I use the generic DRONTAL PLUS. Kills all intestinal worms and it only cost 3.00 a dog instead of 10-15 a dog.

Tapeworm eggs are carried by fleas. Dogs can also get them from licking anything with tapeworm eggs or segments. The segments are sticky and often get stuck to a dog's rear end, transferred to its face when the dog reaches back there, then swallowed if the dog licks its face (or if another dog does). If your dog gets fleas start watching to see if tapeworm segments start showing up in his stool (they are small like large grains of rice). If you see them then you must worm the dog with something specifically meant for tapeworms, they are resistant to everything else. Heartworm meds. are given every month. Other intestinal worms you can pretty much watch your dog's condition but since they aren't always visible you should at least get a stool sample to the vet every year for testing to find out if your dog needs a worming. Otherwise, most of the basic wormers (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, etc.) have instructions on the label indicating a good schedule to worm the dogs every few months. A regular worming schedule is a good idea if your dogs are always exposed to other dogs, roadkill, eating things like deer or rabbit poo or any other situation where they could pick up worms on a regular basis. With a regular schedule the worms don't get time to become a serious problem.

I give my dogs a big dip of copenhagen every couple of months and it seems to do fine, except for my bird dog that kills and eats rabbits every day lol it take to chew a month for him lol.
