I have a 14 mo old walker that i just bought.She trails good and will cut in to barking dogs.now the bad i have treed one bear with her and other dogs she made it to the tree and was there for a little time but left.when i called her back she would not go to the tree.the next bear with the same dogs had the bear on the ground and she went to it but as soon as she got to the bear she left.is she to young to be on bears or do you think something happed at the tree when the other guy had her.And can i fix it.

She's not to young in my opinion,but all dog's are different.It sound's to me like she dosen't like bears as much as she should.She is young ,you could try her a couple more times and see if she get's any better.I have no patience for a dog who dosen't stay with a bayed bear.JMO

Can you fix her? I have said this and told my opinion many times. Bear dogs, real bear dogs are not taught, trained or educated to be bear dogs. They are born to be bear dogs with the mental toughness to handle scary game. She doesn't like bear that is abovius. So the way I see it you have two choices!

I have to agree with Catch, bear dogs are born not made. My last walker treed her own bear at 10 months. Her second bear she bayed on her own for 30 minutes while I sat back and watched. Definately that little dog was born a bear dog saddly the wolves killed her last year. I would hunt it on different game and see how it does if you really want to keep it, if not cull it and forget about it.

Was that her first tree ? Other dog(s) possibly ill at the tree, made her quit? Trees other game but wont on bear ? Not enough info.
If that was her first bear tree, keep running her on bear and let her show YOU if she's "got it."

I agree with BlackTail Stalker....not enough info to make a decision. Unless there are undisclosed problems with her she is not too young to start, but she is too young to cull. Many dogs which do not tree or stay EARLY go on to make good dogs. The fact that some people may have dogs which start very early does not mean DIDDLY regarding your individual dog. Give her more time.

the person i got her from said she had been on around 20 bear for his training seasen.The reasen he sold her was she would not keep up with his dogs and he said she made all most all the trees with his dogs. now allso i have only had her for a week.She was running with dogs she did not know.And is just coming out of heat. now the dogs she runs with now are not to slow and she keeps up fine,even lead the chace for a little bit on the bear on the grownd.

Its true you cant make a bear dog, but you CAN keep the dog and get her to run and tree on bears. Is she gonna bite every bear probably not. but sounds like she is helping in other parts of the hunt. Just try things to get her fired up at the tree.

First thing I would do is tie her at the tree. Close but not where any other dogs will fool with her. And lots of encouragement when she does bark.
Take her out by herslf and have a roll cage. with some sort of trainer she gets fired up on.

I would also get her fixed. Espicaily if she isnt he hardest tree dog. No need in passing on those genes. And you can hunt her everyday with out worrieing about that nonsense. JMO

Why would you keep a dog that doesn't hunt the same game as you do?
Dog food must be cheap where you live.

It sounds to me like the dog is hunting the same game. He is just having trouble with a young dog treeing. 14 months still holds alot of puppy in my mind. Like i said JMO.

put her on a coon today and would not bark so that said it all she's gone.But after that I put her on the coon with my 5 mo old pup that loves coon and she came alive on the coon wicth made my pup go harder.Then let it go in front of them in the trees,and let them go they both treed relly well.so looks like she will be my new coon hound.
