Jeff Allens pinky dog/cold trailing

Here is the story. I get a call from a goverment buddy of mine and they have a problem bear. It's about 8:30 am, and already in the high 80's. Beings it is saterday i load the dogs and tag along. We get to the spot where the bear was caught by a trail cam at 1:38 am. It was about 10:30am by this time,so roughly 9 hours behind this bear and the temps now are probley in the 90's. We unload 8 dogs and and try and get something started. not one dog made a peep. I told my buddy we were to far behind this bear in that kind of heat, but for the hell of it I would like to put Jeff's Pinky dog down. I was very surprised when she started to open along a game trail. All the other dogs came to her but none of them seemed to be able to get the scent. She cold trailed that bear thrue the rocks and junipers and even a couple of old scab flats for about an hour and a half, during this time she only covered maybe a mile or so. She finaly pushed that track down in a canyon with a river in the bottom. it was cooler in that canyon and only then did the other dogs begin to open. it was roughly 4 miles from start to finish and it was around 1:30 when they finaly got that bear treed. This story would be impressive for a dog of any age but this dog is just over a year old. The fact that this young dog led a pack of vetran bear dogs to a bear is yet another reason why I am switching over to these little nance dogs. We all know that ain't the best way to get bear caught up, but it was pritty impresive to watch that little dog work that old track out. Runing these nance dogs this summer has left me wondering if there is any thing these nance dogs can't do. Early starters, dirty cold nosed, ultra fast on a track, quick learners, hard hard hard tree dogs, and almost to gritty. When I got home I called Jeff and told him to price that little dog and she wouldn't be coming home. Do think he would part with her ough no. You guys that have had these dogs for years are lucky, We have about ten days till the bobcat training season opens and I will let you all know how that goes.

It was one of the best bear hunts I have ever been on. Nice change from the normal hot strike and 100 yard trail with a one or two mile jump to the tree. I am on to something here but the credit goes to Jeff Allen, Mike Leonard and all the others that have been ruthless in there breading of these Nance dogs.

Yea, great story and it sounds like everybody could use one of those super, cold-nosed dogs...at least I know I could! Those red dogs of mine will often times blow up on a lion or bear track they can't hardly start or move, and if I had a dog that would take that same track and run it down there wouldn't be a safe place for a lion or bear to hide.........

Poser the best part is she already has a handful of tough dirt lion tracks under her belt with jeff. Ike I think you and poser have your share of cold nosed dogs. But this oregon boy is planning on getting a few.

I would really like to try one of those dogs out sometime...... course i'd probably ruin it. But it would be fun.

Keep us posted. Thanks for the story.

Me too, I'd seriously like to have a yearling that would come out of the box and run down a bear or lion that my dogs won't start......and if there is blood out there like that then send me one.

Seriously! I had my dogs rig a bear yesterday afternoon that we wanted to kill. The track was in that hard clay and had been rained on, maybe twice and was damn hard to see but the dogs hit on it three times when we passed. First I put Ike out, then Choco and Ike, then Ike, Choco, Griz and Kody and then picked them up and left. The sun was out and clouds came in so I drove back to the track, rigged it again, dropped the whole pack and they bumped and scratched and no dead bear.

Now, I hadn't been past that piece of ground in two days, and it had rained the day before and that day I struck it so aging it was impossible for my skill level. But if there is a bloodline of dogs that will take that track to the tree I want one......
