I even hate to bring up this subject. But I was talking to someone in a WESTERN state telling me that several people were just turning there horses loose on Forest or BLM lands and letting them go. Is anyone else seeing this ? I raise the point because in this mornings paper there was an article about how this is happening in forests on the east coast .Are they turning into dumping grounds for unwanted horses?

That's how we ended up with "mustangs" in the first place.

I thought mustangs were escapees, they originated when horses were the best transportation

This is what happens when you ban killing horses. I'm not saying that people should raise horses for slaughter or anything like that. However when a horse becomes crippled and there is no cure what do you do. Sure you say, "put the horse down". Well it's not all that easy or cheap. It costs lots of money to do it in the first place, then the real expense is when you have to have them hauled off. This used to be fairley cheap but has gone up drasticley.
So when someone that couldn't afford a horse in the first place winds up in this situation they simpley cannot afford it. Whats the cheapest way out??? Yep you've answered your own question. Now just like everything else the government is screwing up you and I get to pay for it with our own hard earned money. Don't you love it???

The escapee notion was mostly a conjured up romantic notion. When the Spaniards left with ship loads of gold, why would they take their horse with them when they could go back to Spain and be given or buy the finest horses in the Kings stable? There is a wild herd in Montana that is documented as turnouts from the 20's...same situation economically caused that, as what we are entering today.

the great peter french here in eastern oregon once ran over 1,000 head of rough stock. with the unemployment rate in the high 20's it is easy to see why there are horses showing up all over in the desert heards with no freeze brand. Maybe they will bring back bear baiting, here horsey, horsey

Actually I thought the last horse slaughtering place left was in texas.Seems like the article mentioned that a lot were being sent to canada for processing .wonder where the dog food industry gets there stuff . I do not know that much about that type of industry.

Bob the problem is that now horses aren't worth a thing to slaughter. Most people won't mess with it because there's no money in it. I was at the sale the other day and a horse came through for $6.00. It cost more to sell the horse than it brought. That was the only horse that day but they said thats the way it's been. Too bad Willie Nelson was a big part in getting this shut down (used to like him). Personaly I think we ought to go turn the horses loose in that S.O.B's yard and let him feed them.

Yes its occuring about everywhere you go, theres several indian reservations looking at starting kill plants, one of them being warm springs res. in Oregon. Since there a soviern nation if they can open the facilitys up it will help out alot of things. Right now there going for about 2 cents a pd at the sales yard. I know a couple guys right now buying and butchering them for dog food, cheap food. Cheap bear bait also

http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-a ... 002e0.htmlheres an article from a couple days ago. they are thinnin the pryor mtn. heard of about 190 head to arund 120 head. this is to "improve the ranges ecological balance." the 70 head that will be cut out are going to be adopted, so jo blow down the road can get a wild horse that he aint gunna break unless he knows a hell of alot about horses or he gets a real young one. i would be interested to see what happens to them 70 horses in a year or two

I can tell you what happens to the VAST majority of horses that get adopted. They go to hell and their owners, despite all the Parelli games, realize that they bit off WAY more than they could chew and the romantic thoughts of owning a real live mustang disappear and they end up is sh*t horse "rescues" or in your local sale barn...."Kids" horse who is real sure footed the auctioneer will say

My hunting area is overstocked already with 3 times the BLM horses that the range is suppose to carry. I mean there are hundreds of them and they are eating all the elk feed.Well now you have these stupid people that take there old unwanted horses out there to release them thinking they will run with the mustang.Ohhh what a lovely thought for old paint.
Well it doesn't work this way. The horses are so thick that there is a different stud and band in every canyon. when a strange horse comes up those studs go nuts especially if they are old gelding or a stud perhaps and they are driven off or killed. Usually to live their lives starving and hiding out on one of these rocky points far from other horses it is very sad. Mares you say will be accepted sorry they may get bred but the boss hosses in these bands is always a lead mare and she won't put up with some old gal sliding in there that ain't kin, so again they are driven to isolation. There is one old war paint glass eyed gelding that I have got to know over the years and he hides out in the brush when I am hunting by with my dogs and once he sees I am not a wild horse he will fall in and follow me around just to be close to my saddle horse. Why don't I take him home? Well I have plenty to feed as it is and they can find enough people to adopt the BLM cut so why.
I hate to say this folks but a bullet would be a lot kinder than dumping old Dobbin off. It pisses me off it's about like some scum bag having to move in a hurry so he just takes his dog out on the road somewhere and dumps him out of the car. In his mind he justifies this by saying Oh somebody will pick him up and give him a good home.
Right?
Take care of your own trash folks!

6 cents is all a slaughter horse will bring, hell I was at the sale barn two days ago and papered quarter horses went for $75/head. At 6 cents a pound you would have to hall all stray and unwanted horses in the country to make it worth your while to haul'em to Canada or Mexico. The guys were talkin about the price to haul a horse off, my neabor had a draft horse, he was a lame no good pieace of nothin, his wife is one of those folks that wants to save every animal out there, needless to say they have nine horses that are all lame and cant have nothin done with'em, anyway the draft horse got out because his daughter left the gate open, he got hit by a car on a foggy morneing a Volvo mind you, 1700-1800 pound horse, lets just say it wrecked that car and freaked the lady that was drivein out, the horse ended up with two broke legs and a broke back, the vet came out to put him down, that was $400.00 just to come out then another $150.00 for the kill shot, then on top of that it cost him $2500.00 for Taylo to haul him off. I offered to put the horse down and take him out and put him in the ground, his wife said that that woulden't be right, she wanted him properly taken care of. Well lets just say my neabor will let me put the next one down and take care of it after payin over $3000.00 in fee's.
