i am trying to get a racoon in a live trap i got two live traps set but no luck get any coons just possums. any tips like what to use for bait?

It's probably not the type of bait that is causing problems since coons will go for just about anything. Make sure the trap sits secure on the ground with no wobble. You might have some trap shy coons so try and do some camoflauging around the trap and also on the floor of the trap. Trap shy coons that have been caught before won't walk on wire again. If you're in an urban area, put the trap inside a trash can sitting on its side with trash all over it and in it. It will catch the most trap shy coon around. This time of year, I'm using meat type baits, bacon, cat food.

I use honeybuns religiously in my live traps. I have caught 2 Opossums and a bunch of coons. I know there are both in the area. I think the sweets catch fewer cats and Opossums.

I use only Nilla wafers...not even Safeway brand! Shove the trap in some brush, throw in some wafers and crunch wafers around the trap. The sweet smell just carries so well.

throw a handful of marshmellows in there. and top it off with some maple syrup.

Just something to keep in mind...if you have any skunks in the area you might want to get the trap off the ground. Put the trap on a leaning log or anything to get if off the ground and you wont have to worry about catching any skunks. For bait, I usually just use the 29 cent can of catfood from the grocery store and that does the trick.

use some sardines and eggs they work well too...or just simpily dog food

Cats work good. Spread some coon scent on it and let it go. Cats won't go up the first tree they come to like a coon will. Trained alot of dogs that way.

set the trap where you see tracks, then cover the sides so the coon cant reach in and get the bait, use pb & honey mixed never caught a possum on it just coons

I agree with peake01 to a degree. Marshmellows only if you don't want cats or skunks. I use marshmellows and 1/2 can of cat food. Dribble the juice from the can out in front of the trap from the waters edge. Be sure to put a stake or piece of wood in the ground on each side of the trap so they can not tip over the trap and keep the bait center away from any sides. Trapped several this fall for my plott.

I allways drop a bluebarrie poptar with marshmellows and the next day there be a coon. Only thing is MAKE SURE YOU PLACE UP ON A LOG. Get it off the ground only had 1 skunk, capped it in the head with a 22 and was lucky it did not spray my trap.

set a big rock on top of the trap so it cant wiggle and put a huny bun in it and then poor some GRAPE coolaid POWDER on the huny bun. coons can smell that grape coolaid for a long was. but grape is the only flavor i thank works. but if there is bear in the area doing this is a bad idea if you like your coon trap.

Marshmallows will get you less chance at a possum and never gets a house cat.
