Buying on line

I have a question about buying stuff on line. I have never bought anything "online". I prefer to meet the person and exchange money for the item or order from a reputable dealer or store. I have ran across a deal that I really would like but, distince and time would not allow for a face to face meeting. So how do you guys/gals that buy from individuals "online"? If I send this person money how do I know that my item will be sent to me? What is the best way to do this so that both parties aren't worried about loosing out?

LOL!! yeah I know it's 2009 but, my paycheck looks more like 1909 and I can't afford to loose acouple hundred bucks. I feel the man is legit and have since talked to him and he has made me feel more secure about the transfer. Thanks for the responces.
