What's wrong with people?

There's a guy that I work with that hunts alot and wants to kill another bear and possibly a hog. He's asked to use my dogs and the answer has always been "NO". l've offered several times for him to accompany me but, he always says he'd rather hunt alone. I noticed on the calander at work that he's taken off the same days that I have and today he asked me if I was going to hunt. I said I was and that if he wanted to come with me that he could. He said "nah, I think I'll just hunt by myself and if your dogs or someone elses trees I'll try to beat them to it and kill it". This just rubbed me the wrong way and I tried to explain that the dogs treeing is all I cared about and if he wanted to do the shooting to come with me. I then explained that this is a very dangerous time for the dogs (a shot bear could fall on them, wounded bears can catch them and would require an up close and personal QUICK kill shot) and if he was going to do that to either wait on the owner of the dogs or tie them back with a piece of rope. He said and I quote "it ain't my fault if a bear falls on em or eats em up I have as much right to kill me a bear as they do". I told him that if he shot a bear over my dogs and anything AT ALL happened to them that I would take it out of his ass one way or the other and if he does this sh"t to some of these "good ole boys" that hunt where I do that they will do alot more than that. I've heard stories about dogs getting beat off the tree by other dog hunters who's dogs were treeing too. I've heard many stories but, to hear this crap just made my blood boil. I feed these dogs, work these dogs, and all I want to see is a bear treed or hog bayed. I don't give to hoots about killing one although I will if no one is there that has a tag. We have no laws against killing a bear or hog off of someone elses dogs. We call them "stump" hunters, they just wait to hear treeing or baying and go running.

This is the same man who looks for peoples truck parked and then goes back and hunts there... and tells about it. There was a sow bear that we had run several years in a row. She was on public land but we had an agreement with the neighbors that we wouldn't kill her or her cubs and they would let us retreave our dogs on their property. There just wasn't many bears where she was and they liked watching her. Well this guy saw my truck parked on the side of the road in training season one year (told me he saw me) and went back the next week (when archery opened) and killed this sow. He ever called me to help him load her in his truck. I hung up on him. He then took his cousin back the next morning and they killed one of the cubs that just made being legal. He claimed the cub wasn't with her (horse sh#t) when he killed her. Some of the neighbors accused us of doing it and hard feelings were formed and we quit hunting there. As far as I know there's not been another bear sighting there either. Ethics.. some in our community just don't have any and give the rest of us a bad rap.

I can't even imagine what that would be like Hunter, and can only say WOW! But the law has done little if anything to protect hound owner where I live either--it seems that everybody has rights except hounds! I do believe, however, if that guy did that out here very many times he'd come up listed in the missing person's report. Now I'm not advocating that happen just saying if that happened much out west that someone would most likely get western with him...........
Good luck in dealing with a low values, unethical person like that, as he seems to have NO respect for others!

When we are young, we don't know about things like ethics and morals. My father and mother taught them to me before school. Once in school, my peers and teachers re-enforced what my folks started. Sounds like to me that this guy missed a step or two in the ethics course as a youngster. They still can be taught. Much the same as and older dog compared to a pup, somewhat more "wazzoo" needs to be put into the lesson. Please do the rest of us a favor and teach that clown a lesson in morals and ethics and please put some WAZZOO into it!

Thats a bunch of BULL. Ike I can gaurantee if some one does that out here things will get a little western for sure. That to me is just disrespectful and annoying. Its sad when people like that have to ruin something good that others have worked for. Ethics and morals are a big part in what we do. its like a saying I once heard. "theres always some A$$hole that has to $HIT in everybody elses apple pie." And I think if that was happening around here Some one might just get a good ol country a$$ whoopin!!

Hunter, We had a stump hunter shoot a bear out on some of our dogs a couple years back. It was an older feller and he said the bear stood up and came at him, Right with 5 dogs on him. There was snow on and our treeing switches had been going off for over an hour. We actually walked passed the tree they were treed in and you could see where the bear hit the ground. Of course he shot it with a muzzleloader and we had dogs get tore up. We tracked the dogs to him, who was dragging it and trying to whip our dogs off. Now I was so mad I couldn’t see straight. I wouldn’t have cared if he killed it AFTER we got there. So I told him a few choice words and got our dogs and left. Then he called the Game warden on us, said we were threaten him. Go figure! We do have an impeding the hunt law but rarely enforced. Especially for hound hunters. So I can only imagine how you feel. Sometimes you just have to do what you got to do!

Can this guy walk from his house to where you guys hunt? Seems to me with all those flat tires and engine trouble the poor old boy has been experiencing lately, it would be tough for him to ever make it out of the driveway?

Well after calming myself down and having a night to sleep on what was said yesterday I pulled this guy aside today and had a chat with him. I started off by trying to explain (calmly) why I have dogs and what the "hunt" means to me. I told him that the killing part was actually almost anticlimactic to me. I go to see the dogs work and see all mine and their efforts come together. If he wanted to pull the trigger just come with me and I would even help him drag it out. He just kept on looking at me like I was talking Latin or something. I told him that if my dogs get hurt that I'm the one that has to haul them out, pay the vet bill, tend to them while their down, worry about them like he would his child, and not be able to hunt. I said that dogs get hurt but, I know what my dogs will do and what a wounded bear will do. I don't know what you or someone else would do with a wounded bear baring down on you with dogs hanging all over it. Most likely shoot from the hip hitting dogs in the process. I asked him if he would run in and put a bullet in a bears head that had a dog down. He said "well no". I said see man this isn't shooting a deer from a tree stand. Why don't you just go with me and I'll teach you and you can see the bond that I have with my dogs and why I worry about things like this. He again said "nah".
I guess maybe I'm being a worry wart but, I've never had dogs like I have now. They aren't dogs that I care to have messed with or hurt by someone elses ignorance. l just wish we had some laws to actually protect the houndsmen. We are a slow dieing breed of individuals and if we don't at least try to educate people we'll be no more. I've at least tried.

Hunter, sounds like your beating a dead horse but you deserve kudos for keeping your cool and trying to educate this guy. I know I would have a heck of a time not flying off the handle with that type of mentality. I always try and treat others with the respect that I would like to be shown, seems to go a long way around here but apparently some people don't care. Take care
