Very good advice Beebout-it.
Don Kamphouse wrote a book entitled One is Enough that has a lot of good info on the traits necessary that a dog must possess in order to be a successful bear hound.

Re: bobcat dogs northeastern vs western
You hit the nail right square on the head when you said”i believe comes down to is too many long losses,”. Keeping losses short is what puts pressure on the game to either make it tree or to make it stop. Every dog moving a track faster than a walk is going to overrun when the game turns then it’s a...

Re: Making a loss
When “helping” dogs pick up a loss you know where the cat is not and it’s general direction of travel and when you head in that direction the dogs may then pick up the loss. But if the cat is hunkered down at the original place of loss, having a human stopping and starting in that area may make it l...

Re: Making a loss
Are you talking about while cold trailing or on a jumped track? Any hound moving a track faster than a walk is going to over run it when the game turns, it’s just a matter of how long does it take to pick up the loss. A pack of dogs that work well together and honor each other will be able to pick u...

Re: Hardest trait to get consistently
Lawdawg you have touched on the very important issue of not taking 2 steps forward and one step back. The dogs you have need to be prepotent for the traits you don’t want to lose and the dog you are looking at to add the trait you are looking to improve on must be prepotent for that trait.

Re: Long nights sore legs and young dogs!
This sounds exactly how I started bobcat hunting in the early 90’s. What you are learning doing things the way you are about the game, the country, your dogs and yourself is priceless. One essential trait to possess as a bobcat hunter is perseverance. All the best to you in this adventure and as law...

Lawdawg,
Do you give the Health Gard everyday as a preventative or to treat symptoms? Is $29.99 per quart sound about like the going rate?

Re: Bobcat/coyote
Cat hunters without cats are a miserable bunch of mentally ill people like me. Here in MN with our 36 day cat season and no pursuit season we are without cats for 329 days a year. So, to try and curb my mental illness I chase coyotes around which in reality probably contributes to my mental disabil...

Re: Maybe a dumb question...
I have a friend that is a pig farmer and they have pigs that are culls or die for one reason or another and in the cold part of the winter sometimes I’ll put a whole frozen pig in with a dog. I enjoy watching them use the different teeth that God gave them to eat it. The whole pig will disappear. Hi...
