Re: Pure or cross bred
Mule man I agree the best option always know the dogs you breeding too, or 2nd best option is know the owner and how he assesses hounds, and trust his word. I breed usually in my own pen, and rarely get pups from others and then from only a select few. I generally raise a litter or 2 a year and star...

Re: Pure or cross bred
I think that predictability is the major benefit of line bred hounds, as Sass mentioned it limits the number of genes that can influence puppies. I am at a point in my life where I like line bred dogs or closely related dogs. I think we should always look at traits when breeding, why would I breed a...

Re: What makes a true “dog man/ woman/ hunter”
Mule, in the scenerio you just listed the red dog would get ahead of your pack, by 1/4 mile, the pack would run same track behind him and when you picked him up the pack would carry on as if nothing had happened. But in actuality something was happening the whole time, the game was running farther a...

Re: What makes a true “dog man/ woman/ hunter”
I used to think I knew what makes a houndsmen, however ideas change all the time in this buisness. A houndsmen to some seems be anyone with a Tacoma, aluminum box, Garmin and a Facebook page. And who am I to say they are wrong. Agree with Sass that over running and barking out of place can hurt a ch...

Re: Age of track
Bon plott, I don't think mine care if the turd is 2 days old of 10 yr old, if it's crap they wanna roll in it, man's or beast. Mine also are excellent at finding animal carcasses and carrying bones all the way back to the truck. They could probably smell out a 10 yr old deer rib cage if I let them h...

Re: Age of track
Mule man on more than one occasion I've casted on a fox or cat I've seen cross the road, within 30 seconds of seeing the game, and not gotten more than a few barks, them times they can't smell em they cannot run em, don't care whose dogs they are.

Re: Age of track
Rowdy Fitz, Curious as to the conditions for a 48hr old track. If ya don't mind explaining ideal conditions for that. Not saying it cannot be but unheard of here on east coast.
Also what's your definition of running a track, versus trailing a track?

Re: Hounds Running
Mule....If you stood 25 ppl side by side in a single file line starting 2 feet away from a skunk hit dead in the road, do you think only the 1st 4 or 5 people in line would smell the skunk or do you think the scent would be strong enough for probably everyone to smell it?

Re: Hounds Running
Any of them in the pack that are worth owning are able to smell the game muleman. And I don't like them in a line I want them in a pack, like it when you can throw a blanket over them because they are so close. And when dogs are pushing one to catch him, breathing the same air as the game, they get ...

Re: Making a silent dog
Muleman I'd assume it's natural. I've seen coyotes giving mouth while chasing game. Few years back heard 3 fine mouth dogs coming down a swampy creek running something, thought they may have been some young dogs running a deer and needed some good old fashion correcting, the deer came by and 30 sec ...

Re: Anything to pass the time
The thing I think about is there is a difference between being a hard hunter, successful hunter, and a good houndsman. For example there is a guy down the road who used to have great foxhounds, always catching game, don't know that I ever knew him to raise his own pups, always bought dogs from peopl...

Re: Anything to pass the time
We don't have any hogs so I wouldn't know what it takes to have good successful hunts, but you seem too. What traits makes you like the cur in your hog dogs? Just curious

Re: Bird dogs for deer
Several clubs and people around my area use bird dogs with success in killing deer, some run deer only by sight, some run em 500-1000 yards and then return, mostly I see guys use setters, pointers, droppers, have seen guys using labs. I've killed deer Infront several different bird dogs and house pe...
