A weekend spent hunting Sambar with hounds in the Southern Alps of S-E Australia. This has already been posted on an Australian board for hunters, so please excuse the inclusion of slang and "technical terms".
....... and yes, all dogs were recovered after a hard morning's work the next day ...

Re: Terrier Tracking Collars.
Thankyou for the suggestions, but going back to my original post, my needs are fairly specific.
(1) Has at least 500 yards range above ground. Preferably more.
(2) Is small and light enough so as to not badly impede the dogs.
I have a couple of DC30s, and the thought of one on my smaller terrier ...

Re: fox hunting withe terriers
I'm in grave danger of hijacking the thread, but this is what happened this morning.
I'm still doing the fitness thing. Maybe I'm, in denial about getting older, but it gives me a good excuse to be out, on foot, in the cool of the morning. The pack is more-or-less with me, the "less" being when ...

Re: fox hunting withe terriers
Thankyou, gentlemen.
I've developed quite a liking for the running-dogs. Not only is it superb watching a good one mow a fox down in the open, but when switched off, they are so relaxed that they are easier to deal with than many imagine. When switched on...

Re: fox hunting withe terriers
A "staghound" is generally a hybrid of Greyhound and one of the rough-coated longdogs such as wolfhound or deerhound. Does not have to be a first-cross.
A "Lurcher" is generally a hybrid of Greyhound and working dog, although many now call GHxTerrier or any long-dogxTerrier a Lurcher. The idea is a ...

Re: Thoughts on 320 vs 220 or waiting for new systems
Speaking of the compass feature, I've observed that wearing a radio in a chest harness and holding the 220 directly in front of you - as is natural - adversely affects the compass.

Thankyou, gentleman.
What I'm really looking for are people who hunt a mixture of 30s and 40s. When people who do that are telling us that they cannot pick the difference, that will give us some confidence that the early issues with the 40s really are "fixed".
Or maybe I should just harden up and ...

Buddy.
The caution sounds reasonable and it's one reason why I started the thread. I'd like to keep it open for anyone to comment. It'd be frustrating to spend $$$ only to see a better product brought out a short time later.

Updated DC40s in the Real World?
OK.... it looks like I've missed the boat as far as acquiring any more DC30s. The only ones being advertised now - apart from websites that haven't been updated - are grossly overpriced. ($300)
Next question is whether to take a deep breath and buy DC40s, in spite of the negative experiences ...

Terrier Tracking Collars.
I'm looking at acquiring a couple of tracking collars suitable for fitting to 12" terriers that both work tight cover and dens, and have the habit of disappearing over the horizon when on a hot scent. Many's the time I've only found my No.1 bitch by covering a lot of ground, checking every known ...
