Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

This was an uneventful hunt but one will always remember, can/t recall what we were hunting for, but , recall Tom Barnette and I had a very long walk that day. Recall we were on foot and had lost track of Tom/s dogs, we hiked to the top of a ridge that divided yellow creek drainage & Myrtle Cree...

Yes hounds can be hard to trash break, however later years with a place in country where pups were raised with deer present daily. Modern e-collars, Garmin tracking, dogs like Queen much easier to break. The big problem today finding places to hunt and with Me health. Al

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Fred Riley was one of the nicest person i ever knew. I stopped by his place in Coquille, just to visit. Our conservation soon turned to some young dogs about four month old, he and Glenn Dexter had sent Fred/s best female back east and had her bred to Finley River Chief or Chief Jr. There was a smal...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Muleman, there are very few curs here in this area that i am aware of. Those two females had what they called Carter Cur in them. At the time I bought those females I had never heard of a carter cur. Quite a story but will explain how I happen to owe those dogs. I had made a tough decision to sell a...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Lawndog, think you misunderstood, those two young dogs were mostly all hound, one was out of Cody, guess he had 1/8 Curr in him. Yes he matured into a very good dog and I sold him to a man named John Harpo, John used him on cougar, bear and bobcat, told me he was the best dog he ever owned. John use...

This hunt I am hunting three veteran cat hounds and two year old trainees. Skinner, Cody a six year old 1/4 carter cur, 3/4 walker and molly 1/4 carter cur & 3/4 mixed running & treeing walker. I no longer have any interest in skinning bobcats, for the pelts. It was a nice late morning when ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Lawdawg, at the time those hunts took place it was against the law, to run a cougar with a dog, unless I had a special permit from the wildlife biologist office. Could only take cougar on the land where it was killing livestock, if you started the cougar on that ranch and it was treed on a land owne...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

This hunt is one will always remember. Very near Powers is a drainage called baker creek, over the years lots of good hunts took place here. I was no spring chicken, hills seemed much steeper, canyons much deeper. Dogs hunting that day were skinner, spike and a younger register walker female, Brain ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Yes Muleman that was just the way it was. Recall when Mama passed mom/s older brother paid for funeral services. Mama had most of that 25 dollars a month saved and that was used to help with funeral expenses. This hunt took place in the Elliott state forest located near Coos Bay Or. Bobcat season wa...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Fast forward into the mid nineties, I am hunting dogs that are very good about only starting bobcat, once in a while they did tree a cougar, a dog named skinner was one nice hound and had about three helpers for him, skinner was a different style dog than belle, open real nice on cold trail, very go...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Yes, some of the methods used to break dogs from trashing were harsh before the E collars. Recall asking person I bought Belle from as a five month old, if he had any advice on trash breaking. He said he had loaded shot gun shells with rice, get someone on a stand in deer crossing and blast the dog ...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Yes Lawndog, things have changed. It was a cold rainy day had worked long shifts that week. Was not going to let rain stop me. Belle had proven she could tree coon bear and bobcat, threw her a couple younger females in the Nash, drove about 4 miles up river. Not knowing any better on foot started wa...

Re: Hunts I remember. Al Baldwin.

Lawdog, thanks for the kind words. We arrived in Coos Bay August 59, move to Powers just before Christmas 59. Folks found an old place think 40 a month rent. Roof did not leak, warmed by wood, mom was a very clean house keeper, expert at making place look good as possible. Remember the water & s...
