SaltLick Hound in Kenya

Postby Majestic Tree Hound » Fri Aug 13, 2010 9:43 am

Some Emails from Linda Porter in Kenya ..

Linda has Trained one of our Pups thats almost a year old, "Anna" will be working as a Tracker of Poachers in the Mara ...

Steve,
Anna made it to Kenya and is doing exceptional considering the challenges this environment presents. Thanks again. We may be interested in another female at some point if you will sell us another one. : )

Linda and John
------------------------------------------------'

Hi everybody,

I have finally each the Mara with the dog (Anna) and we are in one piece. As usual it is stunning. I will never tire of this place. Last night we dropped the dog (Anna) off at the outpost and this morning drove back to see the handlers and check on her. She seems to be adapting well. We will start tracking tomorrow and see how it goes.

The migration is in full swing and the wildebeest are everywhere. Lots of dead ones in the river. A casualty of drowning trying to cross. To many for the crocs to eat them all. I am staying in Serena camp for now with my friends Asuka and Brian until John and Coby arrive.

There was a major incident just before my arrival at one of the campsites on Monday where there was an attack on 15 tourist staying at the river camp. 3 were shot and one was killed.

The dog was able to track the bandits for 30 kilometers all night, (that's no bullshit) recovering tons of stolen evidence and coming within .5 kilometers of running them down. One has been arrested and confessed everything. The others have fled to Tanzania and authorities there are attempting to round them up. (no worries it is quit safe here were I am) The dog played a huge role in assisting in the capture of these men quickly.

Other than that all is well and beautiful and peaceful here. There is a referendum vote coming up next week but we expect
everything will stay quite in the Mara. We will be starting training tomorrow and have plans to attend a Masi warrior graduation on the escarpment on the 10th or 12th that should be quit interesting.

I will get some pictures and send them when I can get them up on the internet.

John, the playing cards were a huge hit with all the rangers. I think they were more excited about that than the dog. LOL.... They were so happy to have them and are anxiously awaiting the Volly ball and checkerboard. They are all asking about you and wondering when you are coming.

Well thats it for now. Not to exciting yet but Ive only been here for one day. I'm just stting on the tent poarch with a Masi slingshot I bought in Nairobi and practicing my aim on some baboons that are trying to raid my tent. Hows that for entertainment. Better than TV...
PS John and Coby, we may have some things we need you to bring. We will make a list. LOL : )

I will have internet steady for about 2 more weeks so feel free to write me.....

That is pretty cool stuff. Thanks for sharing. What a life, huh. Sure beats a 9-5 AND you get to target practice your slingshot on Baboons. She better watch out for PETA, haha.

Here's the Story Of "Mara's" (Anna's Sister) Find

MAYES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT K9 TEAM TRACKS DOWN LOST ELDERLY MAN:
Deputy Mike Reedand his Bloodhound Mara went to on 09/24/10 at 0600. At 1030 am He got a call for an 83 year old man with Alzheimer's that had walked away from his home. The trail was 3 hours old by the time Mike and Mara arrived on scene. Its was 80 degree's and hot dry. 15 mins into the search Mara cut the missing mans track 1/4 mile from his house and tool took Mike straight to the missing man who was lost in the forest another another 1/4 mile away. The man was tired and thirsty, but alive. Mike called for air support and lifted the man
out safe and sound.

Congratulations Deputy Mike Reed and K9 Mara for a job well done!. Mara was trained by the Canine Training Academy and purchased by the Mayes County Sheriff's Department in Oklahoma in April of 2010. Mike attended our April 2010 training class at the Canine Training Academy. It was Mara's very first deployment since the team grautated from the class in April. AWESOME!......

Well Linda Porter has just Returned to Kenya to Start training the Pups that the Mara had off SLK's Anna !!

Heres a Short Video of the Start of Training ( Man The Mara is Green !! ) http://gallery.me.com/cta50#100198

And Linda's Photos http://gallery.me.com/cta50#100182&view ... ack&sel=14

and the Email from Linda

Hi all,

I have been pretty busy the last few days with puppy training. All the pups are looking pretty good. The conservancy is keeping 4 and selling 3.

The Mara is beautiful right now. No more Wildebeast so it seems very empty but lots of elephants, giraffe, antelope, buffalo and ostrich have moved back in to the park. Its lush and green form all the rains.

I have been driving between Serana camp and the outpost everyday. About a one hour drive. Its so nice to take my time and just enjoy the animals and the view. Toady I saw a heard of ostriches. Its mating season for these birds so the males are bright pink in the neck and legs and chasing the females everywhere.

Lots of rain lately. Almost every night. Very cool and wet here.

The poachers have been unusually busy dispite the drop in the numbers of wildebeast. Rangers have caught at least 10 in the last 3 days. 6 of the 10 where caught by the dog. Nothing to excting to report for now.

I have sent the link to most of you for the pics and video so if you want to veiw updates just check the link once in awhile. For thoughs of you that didn't get it here is is one more time.
