Hound hunting, related, and reference books Winter reading?

Postby City-Camp » Fri Jan 08, 2010 6:27 pm

Winter reading anyone? Since there’s no published bibliography on big game hunting with hounds books(at least not to my knowledge), I thought I’d list on this board those titles in my collection that I feel worthy to be in any houndsman’s library. Some books are solid hound hunting, some may contain only a few chapters and some I feel are just valuable reference. Of course, some books are better than others and, as in all things, opinions vary. But,,, hopefully this list will be beneficial to those of you interested in hound hunting books. Half the battle is knowing what’s been published(since so many are now out-of-print) and the other half(the hardest) is then acquiring those titles!

I’ve been a book collector(mainly big game hunting) and a houndsman for many years. Alvin Partridge of Piermont, New Hampshire(does anyone remember old Alvin?) got me into the sport of bear and cat hunting with hounds back in the mid-60's. I’ve owned hounds ever since. As for books, I started collecting those even before that!

Dutch Salmon of High-Lonesome(http://www.high-lonesomebooks.com) deserves a lot of credit from the houndsmen community for reprinting and making available some of these hard-to-find books and at a fair price. As for finding other titles, two excellent internet search engines are http://www.bookfinder.com and http://www.used.addall.com. Both search multiple online book sites and allow you to do comparative pricing. Also, as has been mentioned in other posts, Ebay is another good source for finding out-of-print books. Speaking of ebay, I’ve recently noticed several issues of Outdoor Life for June 1959 and February 1962 selling for only a few dollars. For those of you that have an interest in Steve Matthes, Steve wrote articles found in both issues. He later incorporated both those articles into his book “Brave and other stories”.

Well, enough of my ramblings. Here’s my book list. This is by no means a definitive listing as I’m sure that there are many more books that I’m not aware of — also I may have overlooked a few titles that are hiding on me here on my bookshelves. For the most part, though, I’ve omitted the straight coon hunting titles. I hope this is useful info to a few of you.
Good reading and good hunting!
Bill

Catmando,
Maybe I'm wrong... but I don't believe there was ever a Volume 2. I'm looking at an ad right now from the September 1990 issue of Full Cry where Bill Cory(Obe's son, I believe) was selling Obe's books from Center Point, Texas. Only five books were listed...Trailhounds for $20, Locating Tree Dog, Lion Hounds and Beartracker! for $15 each and then Dog Talk,
Volume One for $8. You would think that Bill Cory would also be selling a Dog Talk, Volume 2, if there was ever one printed. When did Obe pass on? Wasn't it before this ad(1990)? Bill

Horshur,
Thanks for the heads-up on those British Columbia titles. Always looking for new reads.
I'll try to pick them up at a reasonable price. Speaking of B.C. authors, I have quite a
few. All big hame hunting, no hounds, but enjoyed Jack Boudreau's books(Grizzly Bear Mountain, Wilderness Dreams, Crazy Man's Creek, Wild Free, and Mountain's, Campfires & Memories) and Pat Ferguson's Gone Huntin'. Have you read these? Thanks again. Bill

Jason,
Like most hound hunting books, HUNTING BOBCATS IN VERMONT, 58 Years of the Hunt, by Don Greene was privately published and probably not that many copies were printed.
I don't recall where I acquired my copy.... maybe Full Cry, maybe a bookstore in Vermont or perhaps the internet. Mine is signed and dated 2001. It's a small softcover with only 39
pages, but has some nice photos... including several cats over 40#. Copyright date 1997, printed by A & M Printers of Cambridge, NY. Greene's best year was 52 cats. He took 117
cats in 3 years, including seven triples and five in one day! Wow! That's like trapping muskrats... Don't know what to tell you about finding a copy. Keep checking those internet sites. Eventually one will show up. If I find one, I'll latch onto it for you. As for
the Grigg book, I'm not aware of it. What's it about? Sounds like your pup will soon be on the mend. Hope he pulls through. Bill

I just wanted to tell you... I remember Alvin - he was my grandfather. I was surprised to see this online while poking around trying to get information about him for my son.

One of my favorites is a fox hunting novel by Hariette Arnow, Hunter's Horn. This isn't fancy mounted fox hunting--its a gritty realistic novel set in Depression-era Kentucky, with varmint hunting hounds, about a poor farmer's obsession with a particular fox, and the pedigreed pups he gets to chase it. You can get a copy pretty cheap on ABEbooks.
