Cecil is still hunting with hounds and is still in Bernalillo.

Re: Cold nosed plotts?
I''ll start by saying I don't know a lot about the Plott breed. I have owned some half Plott crosses that were really nice bear hounds and extra tough. They could be hunted everyday on hard rough country bears and perform at peak performances. After reading this thread and witnessing what a friend of mine owned, there must be something to the Cascade Plott strain. He had a registered Cascade bred Plott that was a total package cat hound. He shined at locating and lining out a track, but excelled at everything. He could unravel an old feeder cat track very fast and quickly bring it to a jumped race. Too bad that strain has vanished for the most part.
Question for someone who may know. Some of the old Plotts were leopard colored as well as some of the old July's were as well. Anyone know of any connection between Leopard's, Plott's and July's?

CRA, not sure of the exact specifics of who it was when, but I have read articles referring to some cross breeding so between leopard colored and and plotts. I would assume this is where some of the Maltese brindles and the buckskins come from in the plott lines.
Re: Cold nosed plotts?
CRA, Rex Bowers who lives in Davey County North Carolina, is a wealth of knowledge on this topic. I imagine any older plott or leopard man from that region could tell you a lot.
As I understand it, before the hound blood was added to the plott line, a litter could have most of the cur colors including black, brindle, leopard spotted, buckskin ...
Justahunter and twopipe know this dog well, and I am sure justahunter would not like him because he was not gritty enough to be a bear dog. But the coldest nosed plott I have ever heard of came from Maine. The name Laney comes to mind but I am not sure. That dog had very cur-like features and was very dark. The stories of the bobcat tracks he could start and finish are legendary. That pure bred papered plott was bred to a pure bred papered July. Neither of them were leopard spotted.
But 100% of the pups were the prettiest leopard spotted dogs I ever saw.

Re: Cold nosed plotts?
Back before the leopards were drafted as hounds by UKC, I remember some one saying this: "not very many UKC registered Coonhounds of any breed make exceptional bobcat dogs, but of the few that do many of them are Plotts."
I my own private thoughts I always thought that was the old Plott cur blood breaking through.
I shared that with a bobcat hunter whose name you would recognize. He said "those good Plotts are like Sasquatch. Everybody's heard of them but nobody's seen one."
Well. I should have took pictures I guess. I could have shown him.
I mett Bobby Brown in the coast hills one day cat hunting with a Plott on his rig box. I think there are several people who knew that plott as an exceptional bobcat dog. Do any of the Oregon boys remember how that dog was bred?
It was just when I was starting to catch a few bobcats. Bobby asked me how many I caught. And he was a fur buyer and asked me to sell them to him. I was confused though, and didn't think I could necessarily catch them again after kill season opened.

Re: Cold nosed plotts?
The dogs name was cannon valley jet . was a heck of a dog . he was from Maine and had some star mtn blood in him I remember . also he was bred to a mtn cur and pups were either brindle or black they were good to . David I bet jet crossed on your old peppy dog would have been some great cat dogs .
Hunt hard cull hard !
Re: Cold nosed plotts?
That is nice of you to say that Kyle. Peppy did not have the speed of Jet, but she is the best cold tracker I ever owned. I never even thought of that cross. But wish I had. That would have been some cold tracking brindle dogs.
So much of bobcat hunting where game is scarce is the stress of finding a good track. Either one of those dogs took so much of the stress away because you no longer had to find a good track. You just had to find a track.
That has to be an exaggeration. But that kind of confidence in a dogs ability to cold track is not an exaggeration. Jet was a phenomenon. I wonder if he has ever been reproduced.

Re: Cold nosed plotts?
I hunt a urus with a little outcross papered plott from that breeding snow or no snow it doesn't matter she flat gets it done. As a whole I'm very satisfied with the Plott breed. There very loyal smart durable and for the most part fearless not to mention track speed. Owned some big name blood lines from other breeds had some good ones but also had a lot not so good. But they would fool you this proticuar breed would look like rock stars. But I went too to many false trees. So over the years I shied away from plotts because of there reputation and I have to say I wish I would have switched a hell of a lot sooner. In fact I'm not interested in owning anything else's don't need it. Wade rouse

Re: Cold nosed plotts?
I had a 1/2 plott and 1/2 walker/running dog female that was built like walker but brindle colored and had that crazy plott drive but brains like a running dog and had a great nose. I caught everything with this dog from California to Idaho. She hunted snow and dry ground and rigged great. Many of the best dogs I've been around were grade, crossed dogs the problem is getting consistent litters and cross's when breeding. A good friend has plott/ running walker cross that's about the same as the one I had.

Re: Cold nosed plotts?
I haven't heard much about Eugene Walker's Pocahontas line on this thread. I have heard a lot of good things about their sniffers and own a pup who is coming on real well so far.
