Cameron Hounds?

Postby Rowdy Fitz » Mon Feb 15, 2021 4:55 pm

I was hoping to learn a little about them. I just read his book and I was curious about people’s opinions on them.
Is there anyone who still has pure bred Cameron hounds still?
When did Del stop breeding them?
Is Del still alive?

I had a dog that was a Cameron hound, I saw the papers. I never took them. But it didn't come from Del himself so I guess not sure if he would agreed with the cross. Good looking blue tick. From my research on the breeding she was on the smaller size of the average dog. She was a easy starter but was not a fan of running bears. So sent her to a friend in Wyoming been living the dream chasing lions and bobcats ever since.

Here’s a number to a guy in Northern Idaho who posted in the UKC forums saying he had pure Cameron hounds.

Looks like you found the info you are looking for. There is more breeders than that, some you might have to look a little harder. If you read his book I think it tells you where he got his foundation to start the Cameron hound from. I loaned the book out otherwise could tell you.

Yeah sorta. I was thinkin about buying one for dry ground. But I did some reading and they don’t seem to do as good as the Nance bred dogs out here in the desert. So I probably won’t be getting one.

I am not sure how far you are from Fallon Nevada, but I know first hand that Cameron hounds do very well in that area.

Like any breed of hound, it’s not the name, but who is breeding and hunting them. There is great hounds in every breed, cross- breed and color. The best breeders, if they are honest and if their standards are high enough will have a few great hounds and the rest will be average or less than average.
There is a geothermal plant outside of town, behind the plant is a mountain range. I like that area but some “Cameron hounds” will make it happen on that range and the rest of the state. Texas is much harder to tree lions.

You must be referring to the still waters. I don’t hunt there, I hear outfitters hunt there so I don’t. I don’t want to mess with anyone’s business. I hunt the further out ranges and along California some. I sent you a PM.

I don't think many outfitters hunt this area or at least not when I was there. I was just a couple of hundred yards off the blacktop, in the valley and could see and hear the plant. The geese would work the fields, pretty hard and the lions would feast on them.

I don’t know where the plant is. I’ll look into it and let you know if it’s public land around it.
