Re: Let’s talk.
I finally did the deed and bought the lumber to build the kennels. I plan to start them soon but I had to put a new roof on my mud room/back porch first. It was leaking due to storm damage. Hopefully no more leaks lol.
These darned dogs better appreciate how much work it’s taking to keep them from escaping to keep them comfortable lol.

Well good luck. Hollowpoint just built himself some nice kennels too.

Rowdy, I think you’re the hardest working dude I know. I’m sure the dogs will appreciate the new digs, mine seem to but I’ll never really know. I’ll post a link of the one I built, if you saw it already, disregard, there might be something in there you might want to use in your design.

Re: Let’s talk.
Every time I build something new for the dogs(dog houses, loafing shed) they show their appreciation by tearing it apart! Loaded up my females to take them for a run, boys had to stay home due to my youngest female being in heat. Through the new pup in with them and get to the end of my road and I got out to check on him and he wasn’t in the box anymore, found the poor fella hobbling down the road, tore one of his toenails and had a bit of a limp but otherwise seems ok. Never had a pup bail out of the box. I’ve been roading the dogs places that there’s almost zero chance of getting a race going and I hate it but with bow season in I don’t want to risk pissing off a elk or deer hunter.

Re: Let’s talk.
HP- Thank you! I have a couple more years worth of projects to finish up and then I’ll be in the free and clear to hunt my butt off!
My kennel design is going to be stupidly expensive and huge. I’m stupid for even doing it but it’s what I’ve always wanted as a kennel.
Joe, I feel ya on the dogs always tearing stuff up. I’m hoping to avoid that by covering the front of all the dog houses and part of the walls with aluminum sheeting. I picked it up cheap from a guy in California just for this project! I will make videos and put them on YouTube as I’m working on it.
I’ve had numerous pups jump out of the truck but only 1 or two do it when I was driving. Let me start off by saying that I'm by no means saying that what you are doing is wrong or bad. But now that I look back, I feel that I was asking too much of them at too early of an age. I was taking 3 month old pups hunting and all they wanted was to be with the rest of the pack. I should have left them at home. I have changed my training process and I don’t take a pup hunting until it’s learning to be athletic. I don’t think that a puppy struggling to get through the woods is learning as much as one that can keep up with the older dogs. Plus they can’t squeeze out of the box if I decide to leave them lol.

Re: Let’s talk.
I completely agree with that, but he was just getting his first ride in the box. He’s been riding in the passenger seat and I figured the 2 miles down my road would be a good introduction…I was wrong but I think he’s ok so hopefully a good lesson about bailing out!

Re: Let’s talk.
Rowdy, I think you’re exactly right about the pups. There are disciplines that you can start them a little earlier than others. I see people do it hog hunting a lot. It doesn’t seem like people consider mental maturity nearly as much as I feel like they should. Immature pups develop bad habits a whole lot. Sometimes it’s leaving with older dogs and staying with them, which some consider hunting, sometimes it’s leaving with older dogs but coming back after a short distance because they can’t keep up, or they don’t understand what they are there for. IT’s frustration and natural, no different than a little elementary age kid trying to keep up trying to keep up with a collegiate or pro athlete. Some of those pups just quit hunting all together and some just go with the other dogs but aren’t contributing because they are focused on just keeping up, it becomes habit. That dog that is mentally mature enough may start off just going with other dogs, but it isn’t having trouble keeping up and it isn’t as overwhelmed, so it’s paying attention to and learns pretty quick what they are there for. From that point on they are usually trying to contribute. Once they get that mind set, I like to put them in a position where they can strike/ locate first. It usually takes a little longer but the confidence and knowledge gained is abundant. It isn’t long before the older dogs are being pushed and challenged which in my opinion makes them stay hungry too. The ability to deal with adversity is, such as running into a bad boar hog, is usually dealt with differently by an immature dog vs. a mature dog. I’ve seen it cause them to quit all together and I’ve seen it completely change their style. The mature ones usually learn which end has teeth and how to work it instead of quitting or becoming a dog that is too loose baying. Just my opinion.
Beebout-it, I bet he learned about jumping out lol. I think it’s good to expose them to that sort of stuff early. It’s just one less thing to stress about when the big day gets there.

Re: Let’s talk.
I’ve got the truck mostly loaded up for my New Mexico trip! Not technically supposed to leave till Friday but I’m thinking I may try and head out tomorrow evening or Wednesday morning. Never seems to fail that all my intact females are in heat so I’ll be leaving 3 home . Really excited to get the dogs in the woods and see my buddies. They’ve been torturing me with pics since last week when the season opened.

Good luck and I hope it’s it’s a good trip. Maybe your buddies won’t have killed everything before you get there.

Man it’s worth it but this drive seems like it will never end!! Sounds like those boys got nothing but worn out dogs right now so should be a few left for my potlickers to get after!

Re: Let’s talk.
Good luck down there Joe! I’m gonna go down there and lion hunt again someday. I tried it a few years back but my mutts weren’t so good. Maybe I’d do better now…

Re: Let’s talk.
Man, I’m really looking forward to this winter! My oldest is finally getting excited about riding her pony. He’s built like a horse just 3’ tall and about 350lbs lol. But I hope to make a couple videos of us out hunting on horseback and following the mutts!
