Anyone catch the horse hound and mule sale on YouTube? Some dogs definitely went for a couple bucks! I only watched the hounds part but I sure find it amazing what people are willing to pay for dogs of all stages. Makes me second guess what I charge when I actually sell a dog but I always say the price of a dog and beauty are both in the eyes of the beer holder

I didn’t watch it but I completely understand what you’re saying. I have seen people put price tags on dogs and get it that I thought was insane. I had hunted with some of those dogs and know for sure I had moved better dogs for far less. I guess it comes down to how bad a person wants a particular dog, how much that person honestly knows, and how honest the seller is. I couldn’t sleep if I thought I had gotten over on someone. Some people are about the all mighty dollar and some are just glad to be able to help someone. Helping someone doesn’t necessarily mean giving them a good dog but being fair to both parties. Taking advantage of someone, asking for a price just because they can get it, that’s the way of the world it seems. We were going through a small town the other day. Gas was twenty two cents a gallon higher at those two gas stations than it was in the next town 7 miles away. To me, the home town people should boycott those two stores. If they are going to show their lack of community then you don’t support them either!

I’ve been trying to get caught up on the situation in Colorado, it saddens me that a anti hunting group can pay canvassers to go get signatures (5to 7 dollars per signature) to take away the right to hunt and control predator populations on a management basis instead opting to use emotional reasons. It’s amazing the tactics they use to convince the voters to take away people paying to manage cats in exchange for the taxpayers to pay government hunters and trappers to kill just as many animals. These same people have a lion walk through their yard because they live in a place polluted with deer and they immediately call to have the nuisance animal removed… the state of our world saddens me. They don’t seem to care that a lion harvested by a legal hunter goes to good use but lions harvested by the government go to the landfill… where’s the sense in that… but we no longer live in a world where much makes sense. I hope this initiative 91 gets shot down for the sake of the houndsmen of Colorado and for the cats they pursue.

These last couple of posts have been downers about reality, lol. Ignorance has and always will exist. The only thing worse than the news stations is social media. People get tough and smart with the touch of a key pad. They tell what they want you to know be it how great everything is to how horrible it is. The ignorance isn’t only regarding hunting/fishing of any and all types, but every facet of life. Some states are making it illegal to have a personal garden! MOST of the people responsible for pushing these types of propaganda have never left the city limits of the big city. They really think Daffy Duck can talk and Bambi caused them to need therapy. They don’t understand how nature works. When a person pickets outside of a slaughter plant to save the cattle and their picket sign reads “save the cows, buy your meat from HEB”, it tells you everything you need to know! That was on TV news , lmbo.

True story
I use to shoe horses for some people that lived on a major highway. Their house sat back off the highway about 3-400 yards in the trees. They happened to be sitting outside and noticed their cattle running in the front pasture. They got on the side by side and went to investigate. When they got out there, there were 4 college students out there trying to catch them. They approached and asked what they were doing? The kids told them that they had never seen a baby cow and wanted to pet one. They were from the heart of Houston. Can you imagine what would’ve happened if one of those ole mommas had got in their hip pockets? They would’ve probably sued and won, lol.

These are your voter base. It’s no wonder we are in the shape we are in.

Walkercurcat, I typed it wrong lol. Technology is great until it isn’t as they say. I tried to type your name in several times only for auto correct to tell me I was misspelling it. I got it right this time.

Well I wrapped up the bear training season with a couple good hunts. Went south last weekend to hunt with some new friends and we treed 7 bears in 6 hunts. My dogs didn’t do great but they made some progress and my Rubi dog ran the last bear from truck to tree. She’s locating and treeing hard

Last night I went up to the mountains to take advantage of the last day of the season (today). Ran the dogs last night, figuring how many bears they saw last week, I dumped the box on the first rig. They went about 300 yards and my Rubi dog made a right turn and my Fern and Hornet dogs made a left. I probably should have toned them both back. Rubi came back to the truck, I picked hornet up about a mile a way and Fern ran the fur off an elk. I found where she crossed the road and sure enough elk tracks. She was about 2 miles away which is a long return in that situation for her. Got her back and we called it a night.

Woke up at 5 and started hunting by 5:20. Not wanting to have another trash race, I decided I’d let rubi start all the tracks and if she goes and gets to 100 yards or so then I’d dump the others in.

I rigged her through a spot where we always run a lion and she struck. I sent the others in and they trailed out around 300 yards. Opening here and there. They covered the hill side but never lined it out and eventually they all came back.

We drove around for the rest of the morning with several rigs but Rubi never left out. We covered some ground and got deep back into some new country that I’ve never hunted. Found huge fields of huckleberries the size of a quarter. I was a little hesitant to dump the dogs back there as it seems a little wolfie.

We ended up heading back to my normal country that I hunt and I took the dogs down to a creek where I always cut bobcat tracks in the winter. Worked with them on crossing the creek and Hornet struck and trailed all over the place never getting it moving. By now it is getting close to 11am and we head back up the mountain to where I camp.

Finally we get a good rig. I dump Rubi and she goes. I immediately send in the other two and the three of them are moving it and moving it fast. They get up and over the mountain all moving together. Everything is going great and then my self induced train wreck happens. I forgot to turn off my handheld last night and forgot my plug to charge it. All three dogs are together and Rubi circles up and comes treed. My other too left her and moved out. I had to loop around the mountain and take a side road up. They were in my path on the side road and my first mistake was trying to pick them up rather than going straight to the tree. I was unable to pick up either of them and then my handheld died. I did have a standard Prong plug but could only plug it in in the truck bed. I got my handheld back to life and drove to the tree to find rubi gone when i got there (like 45 minute later). I don’t know if she left the tree, or if the bear bailed or if there was even a bear in the first place (I few like there was). I toned Rubi back to me and then went and found the other two knuckle heads.

Even though today was kind of a shit show, I feel like we are getting close to getting it done on our own

And an update on Fern and Hornet

Fern has recovered from her early season woes. She is t running the full race yet, but is going to trees. She’s looking up, locating and treeing pretty good.

Hornet is cold nosed tracking machine. I was told by the guy I got him from that he was. His draw back is treeing and staying at the tree. He left the first two trees last weekend so I kept a close eye on him and didn’t let him get more than 30-40’ from the tree before making him go back. He is starting to tree pretty decent but isn't really looking up to locate. I’ve been chaining him up a Little bit back from the tree when I get there so he can see up better.

7 in 6 hunts is a good number. Young dogs had to get something out of that. It’s a shame the season ended on you. A few more hunts may have sure made the difference for you. Stay after’em.

I’m definitely jealous of how long your spring season lasts, as soon as the hunting gets good ours is over. How old did you say that hornet dog is nufo?

We made kind of an interesting little hunt day before yesterday. My nephew and his 2yr old Cannon, our buddy Kohl and his 4 year old Maverick, and myself. All 3 of us brought 2 bay dogs each. I had Ava and Outlaw, Kohl had Chicka and Ken. Ken is a littermate to Ava and all 4 are out of my old Raylynn gyp, three different litters out of three different studs that are all out of the same family. My nephew had Ray(son of Ava and half brother to Outlaw) and Rooster ( out of Chicka’s littermate brother and Outlaw’s grandmother). We cast the first spot and the dogs hunted that little set of woods pretty quick, they are only about 150-200 yards wide and 500ish long. I have seen as many as 300+ head of hogs come out of that set of woods at one time. They wanted to leave and head west so we picked them up and drove down the creek a few hundred yards and cast again. This time they found a boar in his bed about 450 from us. He broke and ran straight to us and they caught him about half way. He was about 160#. They relayed and went about 200 yards further past where he was bedded and bay another boar about 180#. We caught him in some dew berry vines that were so thick that they were choking the Black Locust trees out that they had grown up around and they were about shoulder high on me, I’m over 6’. They relayed again and bayed another couple hundred yards further on another solo boar. This time we sent a green catchdog figuring that we had another about the size of the first two. This was his first day to ever see a hog. The first boar was the first hog he had ever engaged. Well as luck would have it, this third hog that we couldn’t see because of the ten foot blood weeds, was a toad. We sent ole Scooby in and he got baptized. The hog broke and came right past us and that’s when we knew we had a man on the hook. They stopped him about 120-30 yards later and they had him caught. We sent the other catch dog as a safety. We got him dispatched and called it a hunt. He was about 250#. For those of you that haven’t hog hunted, 200 pounds and up is one more powerful beast and it takes a lot of hog to weigh 200. We took some pretty good bumps and bruises but all will be fine in a couple of weeks. It was different finding all three hogs in their beds about 200 yards apart. I guess they were staying there so they could lay in the creek during the heat of the day. It’s real brushy and a lot of over hang down to the water for cover.

Man sounds like a blast!! Pretty cool to get to hunt dogs you’ve been producing yourself for so many years!
